as for if its worth it Yes and No. Depends upon context
If it's just any ol' pickup you can baby it and keep a full repair kit in your truck until you find one in good health to replace or while on the road stop now and then to gut cars for more parts to keep it running
However if it's a modded vehicle that is tough, rare, etc and you want then you wanna heavily invest into maintenance into that vehicle

Totally worth fixing up a car if you find one with a 100% quality engine. It skips the condition check and only has a 1% chance of failing to start.
Also the better the parts on your vehicle, the more performance you get out of it.
Like Beltneck said above, higher quality means easier ignition.
My engine is at 57% now. I repaired it (level 5 mechanics) with 1 spare part and it only gained 1% to 58%. Does this mean that I have to collect 42 spare parts to get it to 100%?
No. If you are lucky they repair 2%. So you have to find 21-42 spare parts. So as an average arond 30-31:P
Engine Condition and Engine Quality are not the same thing though.
You really don't want to waste time and material fixing Engine Condition on a low quality engine, because even if you do fix it's Condition to 100% it will still have a higher chance of failing to start. 85% Quality is the minimum I look for, but I save all my performance parts for ones with 100% Quality engine.
Thanks for your reply.
When I press V and open the Vehicle Mechanics of my car engine I see two numbers:
In Vehicle Mechanics - category 'Under Hood': Engine (58%)
In the rectangular frame above: Engine Quality: 78%
So if I understand you correctly, 'Engine (58%)' is my engine's condition, and I can repair it with spare parts up to 100%? But I can't improve the engine quality above 78%, right?
Engine quality also affects a few things regarding stalling and the like, but mostly ignition.
I once found a 90%+ everything car in the wreckers(well a van technically), but with engine quality 1. It never started. EVER. Took me a while to figure it out, even the that time community manager/moderator/attendant forgot about this little thingie.:D
(just kidding)
But condition affects the chance of the car stalling/shutting down on its own.
They work separately as described in the wiki
https://pzwiki.net/wiki/Engine
Also, I wonder if the wiki is wrong in regards to the chance of stalling. I swear I had my vehicle stalled at 40-ish condition. Sometimes even at the 50s.
Thats right, Quality is a fixed number. So use the car if its all you got, but don't really invest in it or depend on it working right when you need it. Save the good stuff for a better car. Even if all its other parts are shot, they can be fixed or replaced, but it's engine quality is there forever.
A higher mechanical skill returns more engine parts when scrapping too. So if you don't have very many cars to pull from, just level mechanics first by taking off and putting back parts that have no risk of being destroyed. You can use the same vehicle and parts every 24 hours and still get xp.
