How to get food?
I just died in a second run because I basically starved to death. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to avoid this? I can't find food anywhere.

check out PZ map. search on search engine. If you look at the region you intend to spawn in you might see some places where theres good loot
Food is all over the place, just search the logical places like kitchens and supermarkets.

If you're unlucky enough to not find food in the logical places then dig furrows with your hands on grass. You'll find worms. Not a wonderful lifestyle choice but it does avert starvation.

nearly every residential building (house, apartments) will contain food. look in the kitchen cabinets and the fridge/freezer. that should include your starting house.

food stores and restaurants are also a good place to find food, but may take longer to clear.

It's in almost every single residential building in the game, you can also get food by farming and fishing, or trapping. You should have enough cans to last until you can get a farm going.
get all the fresh food you can when you start a save into freezers and then get farming set up as soon as possible.

I wonder whether OP played on a multiplayer server without/before loot respawn.

Or maybe somehow set food rarity to none?

As above, even on insanely rare loot settings you will have a good chance to find at least some food in every house's kitchen. If you are in the middle of nowhere then you will need to forage, plus ofc you can catch fish and animals (with trapping). Check your sandbox settings if you are playing solo and make sure you didnt set loot to "none". If its on a MP server then maybe they are trolling new people :)

possession of a can opener is vital

I've never starved in this game, ever, even when I was new and learning the game--the game just throws so much food at you that it's hard to even get hungry even on low loot settings. If you're starving to death often, I'd like to know the details of the game you're playing--settings is important to know what the nature of your problem is to give any insightful advice.

Agree
Also if you look in a fridge look at your small side bar in your fridge inventory and you will notice it has a freezer. All freezers have some awesome food like steak, pork chops, Salmon, and even frozen veggies. Just try and get them to your own freezer before they thaw and go bad.

One of my early runs, I died because I had all the canned goods, but no can opener
