Concerns about darkness in upcoming update
I am digging the upcoming update with darkness. But my first thought was, the power will go down at some point. Making it so that various light sources will only be enjoyable at the very start of the game. Unless of course the whole power system is somehow reworked, where there are parts of the town or complexes having their own power system. Or with some options to be able to restore power for various cities.

Just as clarification:
This is a awesome update for the game! When the power goes out, you can't really enjoy the cities and their lights in large areas. Yes, you can use generators, no denying that. Very cool that you can have a lit up base. But overall, the cities will be totally dark and many of the light sources isn't on anymore. So all the work as said, won't be enjoyed, only at the very start of the game, when the powergrid is on.

Now it would be a nice feature to have solar power, whereas some areas would still have functioning lights. So that you can still enjoy the ambient lights and the work put into the light system for the cities. From the video, the different street lights and neon signs was really cool looking.

I mean I agree I guess but the power going out is just kinda eh… it happens. I guess just adjust your game settings so the power stays on longer if you’re really gonna miss seeing the new lighting. I play on pitch black darkness so everyone dogging you about how easy it is to see at night even “without a flashlight” I’ll just assume has never played on pitch black nights.

was it a question?

Or you can adjust the sandbox to have more light during the night.

or use a flashlight, campfire, and generator like everyone else when the power goes out?

Right now, I almost never use a flashlight. Or use electrical to make lamps. The new system would make all that more useful.

Candles. We will have candles.
But i hope we will also have torches. Handheld and ones that we can stick onto the wall or in the ground.
And of course this game still needs the Flammenwerfer.

Every house should have a fireplace.

You do realize there's flashlights and generators, right? Now you actually have to bring a flashlight with you during the night, which makes sense, considering there' no light pollution if all the lights are off.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Sandbox mod allows you to change the lvl of darkness or even avoid the blackout. You can use cateyes too.

Personally I like darkness cause makes night a thing you should really worry about.

I just hope they make candles spawn more often. Those things are as rare as a sledgehammer right now. The vibe will be awesome.

Yeah they were always rare, and like they gave light for 3 in game hours. Were a complete waste of matches/lighter fuel.

Missed opportunity for Church Candles, they are a little more advanced burn for the whole day

Actually it is like an alternative to a light bulb for the lamp on pillar. A candle to the Candlestick

I'm hoping that in Build 42 either the Devs or modders make it so that you can turn the power back on.

I'm thinking this area might be important one day

"Powers still on...must be nuclear" ~ Peter: Dawn of the Dead

Just set it for a few months in sandbox if you'd like to enjoy the effects for a bit - The previews do look nice, it would suck to lose it all just a few days into the game.

That's really not how it works, and people need to stop spouting this nonsense. Humans might not have the night vision of cats, but we're quite capable of seeing well enough in starlight and/or moonlight. Now enclosed spaces and heavily overcast nights, sure -- you're not seeing squat. But outside, on the typical night, it's not that dark. Yes, your eyes will need time to adjust if you just left a well lit space. But once they do? You'll have no trouble seeing 'in the dark.' Because night isn't pitch black or even close to it. There's just a lot less light compared to daytime. But even at night, in the middle of a dense forest, you can still see 'okay.' There's actually a lot of illumination coming from starlight.

Where your vision suffers most in low light is color clarity, because the cones in your eyes, which are responsible for 'seeing' color, are far fewer in number and much less sensitive than the rods, which are much greater in number and far more sensitive to light in general (hence why they don't convey color -- they're not spectrum selective).
