Build 42 is getting artificially bloated.
Unlike many other rants about build 42 development, I will not focus on overall development speed. Two of the main features are new crafting system and animals, which are, arguably, taking a long time to make. That's fine by me! Developers can spend as much time as they want before they decide that it is ready to go.

But there are many other features in upcoming build: basements and underground stuff, updated fishing, procedurally generated out-of-bounds zones, new zombie heatmap, fixed foraging zones, new rendering system (that will allow us to sit on the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ CHAIRS), optimization (both for graphics and netcode), updated mod support, readable newspapers, balance changes, new mapping, advanced z-axis limits and new liquid mixing stuff.

My biggest gripe is.. why do we have to get it all in one big package? Why it's been two years without any updates (and even more since any somewhat major ones)? I remember suggesting them more even approach, but, I hope that this was an misunderstanding, one of the Admins responded that nobody cares about small updates. And this whole way of thinking is so.. so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ wrong.

Yes, Build 41 was massive. Because it reshaped a lot of things. And what's interesting about it, is that this whole animation thing had been in development at least since 2016

And you know what's more interesting? Build 36 beta released on December 23, 2016. It's FIVE BUILDS DIFFERENCE.

I must remind you, that in that time they were developing build 39 a.k.a. vehicles build, which was huge (still is, actually. big props!) and weather update for build 40, which revamped whole weather system, added complex body temperature and thermal isolation system and added clothes (yep, before build 41. yep, it still had no visuals, but it had it's function!)

So, for at least four years they've been developing two big features: new animation system and vehicles. And I also should note that they provided us with beta builds, regular patches and weekly devblogs

Now, we have no approximate open beta date (thanks for letting me know about Hallodoid, it's actually still planned to release in 2024. hoping for the best!), all devblogs began to release once in a month and game hasn't been receiving any updates for almost 2 years.
So, all I ask is why can't we get bunch of small updates before two main features of build 42 come out? why devblogs suddenly began releasing only once a month, but before it was once a week? why we've been left with no major updates for almost four years?
Mods support? In one of the recent devblogs you already solved this issue with having several mod versions, like in rimworld.

I'm not trying to be mean or anything, I really love this game. At least six people bought and enjoyed this game because of me and my friend recommending it. Hell, even now, when I have little of a free time, we hop on it regularly. But I just can't stop having this feeling that developers simply want to release another big update to grab some money and go silent again. It's sad, actually, because before build 41 we've been treated differently. But now it looks like that feedback should be positive or it should be ignored.

because, as i stated, before build 41 players were treated differently. we had been having weekly devblogs, regular updates and open betas. don't want to overdramatize it, but we were small part of development process. now we are having closed beta tests with some "PZ mega-fans" that struggle to find water in build 41 and getting surprised by basements in build 42.

open beta for build 41 started because developers needed feedback, open beta for build 42 will start because developers need to sell a bunch of new copies, but to do it they need to make it as presentable as possible. well, i kinda understand it. but this approach simply ignores legacy players in favour of potential buyers
The gatekeeping is really annoying, I have to say. As if people truly have any insight besides loose quotes from the blog to showcase how the build is coming along and feeling to fresher eyes that haven't worked on it consistently, same thing we did with B41 before public testing.

They were treated no differently at all. Streamers even got pre-access to Build 41 to stream, which is something I'm not sure we're going to do again. And also B41 was a lot longer than Build 42. It was showcased in 2016, released to the public in 2019, and fully released in 2022. B42 isn't even at the public testing stage yet, so it's not comparable to the 70+ hotfixes and patches released over the course weekly like B41. There's no difference, they're just at different stages.

B41 had closed testing, then released to a public branch when it was ready for public (yet still with disclaimers about saves, bugs and the like) consumption. B42 has no different treatment at all than B41 had. We'll still be releasing patches like hotfixes as we did with B41 once it goes public.

B42 is such a sensitive topic right now, that saying the truth like you did right now will make certain people upset, but let´s be real, no one forced devs to bring a thousand features that will take them years to finish and for sure will not be finished once the thing is released, just see what will happen with the new crafting system.

I personally would just love the optimization and get at least an update per year adding new content (I mean, why not choosing to make each of their planned features for b42 an individual update instead of a whole package like they do right now?).

exactly. game still has many small, but irritating flaws and optimization issues, which could have been fixed a long time ago, but it's been simply delayed for.. questionable reasons.

It hasnt been two years and nothing is ever good enough for a lot of people.. they did smaller updstes and people complained we asked for big update and people complained ...i think no matter what people will complain they also went to explain and apologize why some of the update took long and yet again people still complained.

They could tell you exactly what you want to here but someone would be right back here making complaints that its just not good enough. There is no winning for them or any ea game, i have seen this same topic with valheim, phas etc.

this sort of thread is getting old though i feel like.
it's like busting down wide open doors. We know. it's been said a vagillion times. They most likely know too. None of this will make things go any faster.

Is speculation and second-guessing a fun and constructive activity?

I'm not asking them to release it faster. I'm just wondering what happened after build 41, why they decided to take this route with no iwbums for such a long time and less informative less frequent devblogs. and maybe make sure that they acknowledge that this whole approach was wrong.
Urban Legend Nov 11, 2024 @ 9:04am
I don't see why they should have to acknowledge any such thing. The game is fun now, it's been fun for years, and it will continue to be fun. Lots of new and interesting things coming. I could care less if they have little updates more often or massive updates with large gaps in between; all I know is that I paid once for this game years ago and since then all I keep getting is more fun. I would guess that the majority of players feel this way. The people who complain are highly visible but they are a loud minority.

well, i remember community whined less when they were updating this game the way it was before build 41. of course, community was smaller, but if there is no updates at all it will anger both those who wants small updates and those who wants big updates.

personally, i think the answer is in the middle. we had a big vehicle update for build 39, decent sized update for weather for build 40 and animations for build 41. i think if we had build 42 for basements/new lighting/rendering or at least one of these things no one would complain.

and if people ask you for big update and you decide to put game on hold for couple of years just to release some mega update then that's, well.. impulsive, I must say

Unless you work for The Indie Stone or have insider information by another means (with links to easily-confirmed sources), most of what any player writes about The Indie Stone developers' motivations and general thought processes is speculation if it was not derived from an interview or other source that can be directly attributable to one of those devs.

of course game is fun, no denying that, albeit vanilla gameplay exhausts itself kinda fast imo. i still enjoy this game, but as i stated there are small flaws, solution of which would be simple, but because of this approach it's delayed for a couple years at this moment. can't really call myself a minority, i think you can both enjoy this game right now and be frustrated because of no updates.

okay, that's cool. now, can i ask you to quote that part that i speculated, please?

I've underlined the most obvious of your speculation and guesswork that I found, that being in your final paragraph...

I don't want multiple updates I'd rather wait it out for everything.

Let's not make many updates,
I'd rather one big update with everything they shown so I can finally buy this game.

After seeing everything I refuse to buy now till it's all out in an update I don't want mods trying to replicate these things I want all Build 42 & what it's shown.

Not bloat to me, essential features & looks to make the game even more fun.

Just be patient.
