Carpentry -
The best or worst skill?

When we are talking

Mechanics, Cooking, Farming, Foraging, Metalworking, Trapping.

Because i am late to grind up carpentry on my current run, and am looking around for things i can XP farm, am trying to build stuff for XP floorboards, fences, chopping trees, sawing logs. But truth is am only grinding up the carpentry for experimental purposes. Not for survival purposes. My mechanics cooking, farming, trapping, is my survival.

At some point is carpentry a requirement? For example: when the vine weed eats the walls will at this point it become necessary that most if not all locations will require some repair?

Carpentry affects the HP of the barricades you build, as well as walls, etc,. But, no, pre-built structures don't need repairing over time due to erosion. You can easily survive without carpentry, but it's a better skill than metalworking in terms of construction, imo.

It's also pretty easy to level up too.

It lets you unlock some building recipes if im not vrong, so its not entirely useless, but really just very easy to grind and level up

Can metal working make door hinges?

Nope, it's basically just like carpentry - but with metal, less options, and not as easy to grind. Oh, and a lot of the recipes you have to get from magazines.

Carpentry is one of the best, if not THE best survival skill in the game, imo. You need to level it up to build stairs and water collectors, which are two of the most game changing items you'll ever be able to make.

Water collectors ensure an endless supply of water so long as you have rain, and stairs give you access to areas you wouldn't otherwise be able to access, as well as building zombie proof constructions.

Not using carpentry is hard mode. Go for it if you want, but it's something I level up as much as possible every time I play.
I'd say it's pretty subjective and up to personal taste. For me the most important skill I use is infact Mechanics and Electrical 1 as I love cars and being able to hot-wire early changes everything.

Then it would be my firearms skills then carpentry as I do like making rain collectors and building crosses burying random survivors (makes me feel good).

Otherwise for structural needs I just use any building inworld and place down a TV or whatever to blockade things. I don't really make custom bases.

Cooking, First Aid, Farming and Metal-Working are the skills I use the least. I at the very least get 2-3 levels in cooking then skip the rest of the cooking shows while I get levels in Carpentry, Foraging, and Fishing to form the core survival needs.

You can gain some extra XP by disassembling furniture as well. This will also give you nails and planks to use for your building projects. Can get a lot planks just by taking apart tables and chairs in restaurants.

By doing that it reduces the number of trees you need to chop down and saw up.

I selectively chopping the trees for clear vision some distance into the forest. The big fur trees first any tight bunches
Spear crafting is one of Carpentry's big hidden boosts. They're easy to make but quick to break. However, spear quality increases with your Carpentry stats, and melee is already buffed by Carpenter traits. With a kitchen knife taped to the end of it, you can get one-shot kills pretty early

Not sure if its the best skill but definitely one of the better qol skills. as others said better crafted weapons, fence on the sides of yr door to cover blind spots, rain collectors, composter is nice for winter.

But I'd say foraging is my fav.
