Checking for poisoned Berries/Mushrooms without Herbalist trait
I know with the latest update that berries/mushrooms now have a random chance of being poisoned and only characters with the Herbalist trait can tell them apart. My question is if there is a way for other characters without this trait can figure out the same thing without having to do trial by error and die? I have a character that's lasted a good three months before thenew update and I don't want to start a new game since I'm pretty set with this one unless she dies in a blaze of glory killing zombies with her frying pan of doom.

This might be wrong (haven't tested yet) but from what I can tell in the changelog it's only one species of berry/mushroom that's poisonous, so as long as you only ate one species at a time and waited for the nauseated moodle you should be okay.

But then again poisonous berries or mushrooms might be fatal from one bite, uh-oh

try it! you'll like it!

or just take herbalist...

yes i am quite sure i remember that its one species of berry and one of mushroom are made randomly poisonous at the greation of each game. so you never know which it will be. youve got pretty good odds, but once you know which is bad, you are good to go.

If you eat the wrong berrie though, you are dead. White berries = guaranteed death in previous builds. Now you have no idea which is the "white berrie" without herbalist. I wouldn't take the chance if I were you...

Kind of like russian roulette except you can keep using the same chamber:
if you want to roll the dice on life, eat one type of berry. Then only eat that colour if it doesn't kill you. You can keep rolling the dice, but you're at greater risk of death/poisoning the more you try, so if you're brave maybe go to 2 colours identified, but then just stick to what you know...

I just made a topic saying how to figure it out. I was wondering how long it would take until someone would post this without reading my science. You can eat 1 sometimes 2 without any harm, I ate 2 orange berries (my poison) along with getting well fed then took painkillers and had no effect.

So yeah, only 1 type of berrie/mushroom will be poisonous, but do'nt worry, it's no more eat 1 and die, it now takes time and more than one, so don't hesitate to experiment, one bite at a time tho.. :D

Oh, thanks for clearing that up:) That needs to go into the Wiki now.

Wouldn't it be reasonable to get the ability to identify the poisonous ones after surviving a poisoning? Well not some Skyrim level alchemy OFC.

Wait, can you survive a berry poisoning or not? If you go all well fed and rest...

Edit:

So you will get sick but you wont die from a poison berry if it's just 1? nice

I second this. I know in real life that if I eat something and it makes me sick then avoid it.
Though if they are eaten as part of a recipe or you have eaten more than just the berrys recently it should be a chance to work it out kind of thing. And if you eat it with other potentially poisonous foods then there should also be a chance to identify the wrong berry.

Yes, as long as you only eat one apparently, it won't kill you. More than one will probably kill you. And it isn't just the berries to watch out for, it's mushrooms too. Any one type of berrie or one type of mushroom will be generated as poisonous. Just one. So be careful.

But can you eat a poisonous mushroom and still live like you can eat 1 poisonous berry?

Based on the Dev's response, yes. I haven't tried it personally yet.
