But overall "saving enough people to start a new city to stabilize the population" sounds like something Indie Stone and most of the player base would prefer to do without winning the game. Perpetual sustainability is basically one of the major goals of 42, and a lot of MP servers are eagerly awaiting those changes. So a future goal (far future since NPC themselves are set for well after 42) is clearly sustained settlements with NPCs.
On top of that... "Hopeless" might be a slight exaggeration but Indie Stone seems to clearly be portraying a world where the worst has come to pass and no one is going to save you. If there is any hope to found it lies in the lucky few resistant to the airborne form (the players).
So while I love the Extraction Quest I think it's not really what IS has in mind. And I'll be a lot more focused on long term play when there are better rules for it and I know the map won't be upheaved at some point in the forseeable future.
