-Expect to die, a lot.
-Consider starting on a low population city like riverside or rosewood until you're better at combat.
-If you're being chased by a horde too large to fight, enter a building and leave from the other side.
-Sneak everywhere.
-If your character is weak and/or unfit, try to avoid combat until they're in better shape.
-There's an ingame map but I suggest using this one https://map.projectzomboid.com/ to plan your moves.
-Try to focus on using one specific type of weapon, each job gives more proficiency with one or two kinds of weapons (ex. Lumberman is more proficient with axes), using weapons you're proficient at gives them higher damage and makes your weapon skill go up faster.
-Your carry weight is limited, take a look at how much you can bring with you and only take the essentials (specifically weapons, food and drinks and healing items), everything else is optional.
-At 6 am/pm and 12 am/pm, you can tune to the life and living tv channel and watch programs to learn otherwise difficult to gain skills. The programs will cut off after the 9th day, you can use this page to check the timetables. https://pzwiki.net/wiki/Life_and_Living_TV
-Guns are loud, if you plan to fight with one the horde will get much larger before it gets thinner, so bring lots of ammo.
-Molotovs are your best friends
-After 6-9 days in, you'll be visited by an helicopter. If you can hear it, it's already too late. Keep moving and do NOT stay in one place, unless you are fine with the entire local population coming to your exact position.
-Water and electricity will be cut off after a variable amount of time, plan ahead for that.
-Base nearby a water source or build a rain collector, however the latter requires 6 in carpentry.
-You can power your base even after electricity shuts down by using a generator. Generators run on gasoline, you can get gasoline by syphoning it from cars and gas stations. Gas stations stop working when the electricity shuts off as well but you can make them work with, again, a generator.
-Speaking of generators, DO NOT keep them inside.
-Vehicles are everywhere but to use one you'll need to find a key or hotwire them, gaining the ability to hotwire requires a bit of grinding both the mechanic and electrician skills. The burglar starts with the ability to hotwire cars, which along with the long blunt proficiency and sneak bonus makes it one of the best new player friendly occupations and one of the best occupations in the game imo.
Finally, here's a collection of addons I consider qol: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3246350696
