Project Zomboid

Should electrician be able to make authentic sentry guns?
So imagine this, you pick electrician, you find various components like a bread board, computer chips, wires and two rotors as well as a weapon of your choice before using a desktop computer to program your new contraption.

Maybe it's a dangerous contraption that cannot tell the difference between friend or foe, maybe it uses facial recognition and kills you when you put a balaclava on.
Maybe it is necessary to put a cover on it or rain water would break it.

I think it would be pretty cool, it would make a lot of noise and kill while at it, I don't think zombies would attack it, their instincts do not compel them to attack it as it is basically a robot, they might trample on it and break it.

A hypothetical sentry gun constructed in a zombie apocalypse would likely use 22lr ammunition as it would be the most gentle and accessible ammo for a small and potentially fragile construct.
Judging the year the apocalypse takes place it would likely be controlled using a remote so that its creator can pass by without being shot by his own turret, facial recognition would be harder for a survivor to achieve at that time.

It's possible that the thing that kills you isn't starvation or infection, it could be that another survivor built this contraption and died leaving its sentry gun fully operational, you might open a bathroom door and see a robot gun mounted next to a window and the last thing you see is its barrel turning and looking you dead in the eyes.

No.

In addition, I think the way these sentry guns work is that they likely would use motion detection as it would be the easiest way to program sentry targeting I imagine.

Anyway, the odds of encountering a sentry gun should be a super rare experience as it is quite a feat to build a working sentry gun while in a zombie apocalypse.

Should a player encounter one, it shouldn't be hard to evade and stomp like a menacing spider and you've got your big boy boots on that day.
Electrician? No. Engineer? Maybe. But, this would be a fantastic way to make your base uninhabitable. Have you tried firing a weapon in PZ? Having one that automatically fires when it sees a zombie would bring every zombie in the game straight to you lmao. Anyway if you wanted something like that then I'm sure you could make a mod for it, or perhaps someone already has.
id imagine it would have to be able to have a silencer, i mean how else would this be practical
I mean, if a modder makes this kind of thing, sure.
But vanilla? Nah. This isn't Death Road to Canada.

No. The sound would get you killed. Also doesn't fit with the time period.
I’m gonna be honest, 7DTD added in sentries and they are pretty op. I like that zomboid actually tries to be realistic in some aspects while keeping it grounded as a game. Let’s be real, your character isn’t a damn scientist. While traps for zombies should be added sentry guns in a zombie apocalypse game that takes place in 1992 is gonna be mega weird.

If anything there should be traps that truly show the desperation of survival. Like pit fall traps, spike walls, massive fields of barbed wire, homemade mines, electric fences, gasoline puddles etc.

Turrets are too advanced and would make the game overall less engaging once built. This is kinda what happened with 7DTD unless you play on a high diff. I’m not shooting down your idea I’m just saying this probably is best suited for a mod instead of base game content.

before sentry guns, do security cameras by opening a new window when interacting with the cpus terminal, that shows a focused screen of the cameras connected. Later decide how a security camera can be extended to activate a remote weapon that won't burn the place down

Hmm, electrical engineer here. never constructed sentry guns so far but i have experience with siemens sps 5/7 - so you need a actor-/sensor topology.

Could explain that but most people wouldn't understand it, so in short: do you have the components, a reasonably stable power supply that feeds a battery, rectifiers to convert AC to DC and transform the voltage down the components to compensate for fluctuations to achieve voltage stabilization.

Roughly speaking, this would be feasible, the parts can be found in every large industrial plant in large companies. Of course, a lot of improvising would be necessary.
i understand what you are saying you need laser feedback to get a voltage reading of change in the environment. In the 90s advanced enough set up to create a tracking weapon, this tech would be uncommon, but motion detectors from houses and automatic lights and automatic door would be common.
However, more common to design would be a mechanical based trip wire activated gun. That either trips a wire pulls a cord and releases a hammer slams a trigger down, and unloads a full mag of whatever gun is attached without racking between shots, or else just functions as a single shot defence.

Go back to TF2, heavy

I dont think we have automatic turrets even now, do we? Might be a stretch for the 90's. Wired based trap guns i could see though.
