is the red panda/tanuki the mascot of the game?

i just got the game (shoutout to my friend for gifting me) and was wondering why there was a red panda/tanuki

Before Project Zomboid the devs were working on a fighting game where the characters were different animals which offered different abilities

The characters can be found in the game as the various Plushies but the fan favorite was Spiffo

After all this time Spiffo is now the mascot and is even a character for the fast food chain in the game

It's a Lorraine McLees thing where one of their girlfriends wanted to contribute art to the game but worked almost entirely in a different genre so they just shoehorned in a cute animal as a quasi-Vault-Boy type thing to represent a vile scavenger since that's all you can be in this game

…do you have a source on any of this? (especially the “vile scavenger” part because you can totally live off of foraging/fishing/farming in a cabin in the middle of the woods)
