Does multiplayer lags?
I'm planning to buy 4 packs for me and my friends to play but I don't know if this game has horrible desync or not. We didn't plan to play on dedicated server, instead one of us will host and the others will join through steam.

Depends on how far, if your ping goes above 90 it gets really bad if you are in a vehicle near eachother but running around solo far apart sort of has this reality bubble that won't lag, so you can base together just don't fight zombies (or drive) near eachother if it's bad.

In my experience I tried playing with someone in Michigan and I live in California, I don't have the best internet since I use a cell tower for a connection, so my ping is around 100-120, what happens here is cars will rubberband (if I ride in them I get stuck in a black void till I relog) or phantom zombies start appearing after they are killed by the other player, maybe some take awhile to load in and just sorta teleport (scary) so I mostly have to play house keeper or run around solo (since I don't have lag by myself if far enough away)

As for vehicles if I drive around sometimes the wrecks spawn in late and I crash into them ruining my vehicle, it's rough to drive around without going very slowly and towing the wrecks away so future driving won't have suddenly loading car directly inside you.

Anyway if you regularly play with your friends and you know your ping to any of them won't go above 90 then it should behave till you go too far with mods.

EndNote: Be careful no matter what around vehicles as that is loading a lot of things all at once for multiple players and anything can happen even with low ping so have anyone drive further ahead or at least say over Voice chat what lane you are driving on and be a distance back, never know if a spike will hit and teleport into each other and instantly die.

We do play tabletop simulator and have ping stabled at 70 - 120. I don't know about this game but what you just said it looks like it needs to load a lot like minecraft.
Loading isn't a problem, until you start zooming around at high speeds in your vehicle. The maximum vehicle speed is lowered in MP to try and mitigate this problem. It feels slow when you are used to moving around unhindered in solo player, but that's the current compromise.

You'll have more problems if you play on dense custom maps and/or with boosted zombie populations as well. In this case you'll lag by having your client freeze up as it attempts to render all of the floors and all of the zombies in visual range of your character.

There is some work on the game backbone to solve this problem, but right now running through a custom map like Raven Creek with populations even a little boosted is a good way to lock up the client and get booted.

Do you think it's best to wait a little longer or is it worth buying now and taking risk? AFAIK buying a 4 packs and gifting them to my friends is non-refundable.

Hi Kompaktive, do you already try the multiplayer? I want to know if the multiplayer works fine.
DaddyEcho69 18 jan, 2023 @ 3:47
To elaborate more on the zombie fighting in multiplayer. If I recall correctly, the game does this cool thing where if a client is fighting a zombie (or zombie targets them) that zombie becomes local to the client, so they have no ping issue. However the problem comes in if you have high ping and you're all fighting right next to each other causing zombies to constantly switch targets and become local to a different player constantly, making them teleport around. If you keep a few meters distance you should be fine with a higher ping, depending on how high the ping is.

Wow, that looks better (since I have bad experience with Don't Starve Together).
Thank you for clarifying :)

You know what? Thank god that this is a thing, since due to the fact that I have a very bad performance with PZ and in mp when my game freezes I would've thought I'd be standing afk while my friends watch me hopelessly getting eaten alive, but that wasn't the case and I had the chance to survive another more hours.

we had tried for 2 players and it works great, until it comes to driving a vehicle... a major desync issue when the lagged player load chunks too slow, the game decided to stop the car in the last loaded chunk, causing a very confusing situation where your friend will shout at you why tf you stopped the car in the middle of the horde (and cost his life) while in your screen you just witnessed your friend died inside a car for no reason while you were driving full speed. That actually happened when I already set the speed limit to 30km/h.

As far as I remember this issue has been fixed a few patches ago. But I recommend you to test those sync issues related to vehicle immediately and refund it in case the issue still persist and you and your friends find it unacceptable.

Sry for bad english.

My friends and I are having this problem, even after these updates. Is there another method to fix it? Or do we simply have to put the maximum speed of cars on the server and hope the worst doesn't happen?
