Because if the cell becomes "unloaded" the fire will be marked as burning, but the timer for it to burn out will stop. So in order for the fire to go out, you either need to put it out manually or wait for it to burn out on its own (while watching it).
Never use fire.
One fire will consume the entire map. Rosewood to Louisville will eventually all burn down. Completely.
Even if it rains.
It's impossible to be in all locations that are burning the moment a flaming zombie walks away, and so you will never be able to put the fire out because cells with fire will be so widespread you will never be able to be in all locations long enough for it to burn out.
I started a fire in Rosewood my first week into my current save. I had to move to March Ridge because the fire never stopped. I tried fighting it for a week. It was even raining for a few days. 2 months later, I went back to Rosewood to collect a spare generator.
Guess what?
Town is still on fire.
I'd say that's a major bug that needs fixing, immediately.
No rain or anything. Just went out on it's own. Sounds like your settings may be messed up or a bad mod interaction or somethin.
I remember half a decade or more ago, I made an account on TIS forums called "FireOnAsphalt" because I had the exact same problem back then. Made a rage post on there about it back then. Some ridiculed it, some agreed. Regardless, the problem still persists for me. I've watched many Youtubers and streamers use fire to eliminate zombies, and I've never understood how/why their fires go out in a somewhat predictable pattern but mine spread eternally no matter what always.
At least now that I've started streaming Zomboid, my character survived a scratch. I went literal years of playing this game without ever surviving a scratch. First character I made on stream? Survived a scratch. Figures.
Well, like i said, the fire I caused lasted 3 days. The street was on fire. The street. The asphalt street. There were also zombies, many of them, on fire. but no buildings. Now, I did leave that area, I tossed the moly and ran down the street, and then to base. When
I came back to that area, it was on fire. So, I think its like dude above says, that when you leave a cell, it just kinda pauses there. The fire did go out when I returned. I killed the zeds, and then watched the street burn out.
I've had lots of experiences in other games, that the mods didn't have and seem to think don't exist. I had to make videos to prove my point, I suggest you do the same. Go to this area, and record it. Making a youtube video is easy and fast to learn, and takes around 5 minutes. Also, just remember, they are chat room moderators, not the game dev's, and these games are in development, not even to the beta level yet. The feedback that we give should be relayed to the dev's so they can take a look rather than disregarded as "not my experience."
That being said, fires do spread. An entire city can be burnt to the ground, rather easily, in real life. In the old days towns had wells, and water boys to deal with outbreaks of fire, and even today we have fire departments everywhere, who are scrambled immediately. A light rain cannot stop a blazing forest fire. It takes a hard rain, that lasts all day, or even days, hence the issues in California, for example.
I would think fire is a real issue during a zombie apocalypse. There is no fire department or well. No groups of people with buckets of water or extinguishers. A city can be burnt to the ground and that fire could spread all throughout a countryside. So, in some cases, it is rather realistic. Although, I don't see an asphalt street burning due to a moly. If all the buildings were on fire, and we had a raging furnace going, then yea, it would melt, but not a moly and a few burning zeds. I will view my molys as Greek fire from this point on.
