125% will take forever. But i guess if u maxed all melee weapons than maintenance will be pretty high by that point

Depend of your weapon. Chance to lose condition on a weapon is based on your weapon base chance + value from maintenance and weapon skill. Every 2 maintenance you gain 2, and every 4 weapon skill tou gain 2 for a total of 14 max (10 maintenance and 8 weapon skill)

If you have a weapon with already a good base chance (like a crowbar 1/70), maintenance won't be as useful overall than if you use a spear (1/2).

That's the difference between 1/70 to 1/84 for the crowbar, and 1/2 to 1/16 for the spear

And yeah it's terribly long unless you do cheesy tactic and leave your pc with a macro of some sort or mod it.

kitted out for it in teh build you can have up to 4 maintenance seemingly quick. Maybe by 1 month. But any higher is a huge time investment. Would be nice to get maintenance from conducting the actual weapon repairs. And it increases its worth for every x1 repair it gets.
I use to play maintenance and use to use weapons you shouldn't like pens and glass bottles. Can't say how good it was it was still a grind made combat difficult but i guess the idea was if the weapon damages easily then it generates maintenance easily

hm .. interesting.. I hadn't thought much about the mechanics behind Maintenance and whether there was a logical reason to mess around with the worst weapons.

You gain maintenance points for depending on your weapon skill? I thought it was just using weapons in general. My two main picks is either maintenance man or cop.

I always start by using low condition weapons first than once I get about four I start using better weapons.
My current run I've killed over 1100 and I think I'm on five or working to it. Once I've hit six is when I even think about using a good katana.

You can be maxed out before 6 month of playing if you aim for it, but it requires +1 maintenance in your build.

Once you get your maintenance up it will be super helpfull as your weapons simply last for much much longer.

The reason you would push it up is mostly if playing with 1-2 specialized weapon classes, but is helpfull even if maxing out all.

Pushing doors while having a weapon in your hand will significantly increase your maintenance. When playing for a high kill specialist you can be lvl 4 maintenance after one full day of practice and easily lvl 6 within 5 days of full training.

If you want to let it grow naturally it will rougly max out once you maxed out short and long blunt.

Maintenance +1 in your build can be highly advisable, but it also comes down to game settings. If standard settings i problably wouldnt bother,. With high pop i would bother.

Not what he is saying. You gain xp if you pass the check if you weapon took damage on each individual hit.

Some weapons last longer (the longest being crowbars and second axes, while spears last the lowest.

What he is correctly saying is that the chance of that weapon taking damage is a combination of maintenance and you weapon skill.

Maintenance counts as 2 times the value of your weapon skill roughly which is why the better you get in maintenance and weapon skill the longer your weapon lasts. You can check the below link to see a weapon damage table.

There used to be a fairly quick way to grind maintenance by banging on garage doors while inside a car. You can still bang on the garage doors to gain maintenance EXP if I recall, but it will take more time.

You can also do stomp kill while equipping a weapon to level up maintenance.

But... who the ♥♥♥♥ cares about all that. Crowbars! Just use ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ crowbars and you don't have to worry about maintenance at all! Crowbar gang ftw!

I really want to like Crowbars but they exhaust you so fast even with Strong/Athletic and it makes sense. Even the people who like Pipe Wrenches I look at kind of weird.

There are a few things i'll just add as an extra, allthough tommy_b_schmidt has given a reply that covers almost everything. And yes as he states it depends on use, so with certain items it is not just necessarily "fighting" that raises it.

1) Stomping enemies with your shoes ->raises maintenance (Never bothered to check but i think even walking does raise it on a miniscule level:P)
2) Stone axes DO NOT RAISE your axe skill while chopping wood, but do raise your Mainetnance -> a good way to increase it, and get some wood while not ruining your normal axes.
3) Long pipes and crowbars are proabably the best in maintenance raising, maybe hammers as well.

Try to build up axes with maintenance then go stone axes once you are maxed out, pair with high fitness you will be hitting all day without really getting tired, one kill hitting too, as they have higher crit chance. usually starts to become strong around lvl 4 maintenance 5-6 axe skill. only weapon that can compete with spears, you can for sure go World record killing based on stone axes.

Its a fairly "complicared" thing to do when you can grind +1600 maintenance (M) just pushing a door a day if you have maintenance +1, fast learner (FL) and no pacifist. (P)

M+1, F. +1600 a day
M+1, F. P, +1350 a day
M1 Slow L and P +650 a day
F +350 a day

Just to clarify, only if we take are talking about crafted weapons;)
As nothing beats katana regarding melee weapons currently:)

Well true :-) i was talking about a sustainable high kill weapon, that has almost half the endurance cost compared to say crowbars,

Stone axes 1,2 weight + higher crit chance. if you take spears longer distance out of the picture, best weapon in game long term.
Crowbars 2.0 weight lower crit chance.

Once the foraging is up, dont really mind looking up some chipped stone, you will find more than you can ever use and have better durability compared to spears.

I have heard of doing the Lumberjack Stone Axe build but I am so much more partial to the Repairman Spearman build if I just want to kill zombies from the get go. I find that Lumberjack is far more valuable for people who like to build bases and that just is not me most of the time. I like to alternate between Repairman Spearman and Park Ranger/Forager builds.
