The grass changes is just another application of the engine improvements that were slated for B42 as well (the same as the new doors).
The new grass was something quick to do and easy to show the community, so I see nothing wrong with throwing that in.
Without stuff like that it would be difficult to show what the engine improvements are about.
And I don't believe crafting was the only focus for B42.
