Project Zomboid

This Sledgehammer situation is getting ridiculous...
I spawned in the Riverside trailer park and made a beeline for the factory/storage lots. I checked every crate, every box, and every metal shelf. I raided the gas station, the auto repair shop, and every storage unit. I even made a run to the hardware store in downtown Riverside. All of this while having the Lucky trait.

Nothing. Nada. Absolutely zero sledgehammers after opening up hundreds of the containers meant to spawn them.

On the plus side, I did get 2 antique ovens, 4 garden forks, a wood axe, and 7 generators.

Ever found a battery charger? I haven't. Ever.

Bad luck is bad. I've ended up with 6 from a similar run without Lucky. :winter2019joyfultearsyul:

Sucks, but, that's part of the game- Dealing with the hand you're dealt. And sometimes that means going a long, long time without finding a tool you really want.

It happens. On the positive side of things, there's not much loot in riverside that you need a sledgehammer to get at. If a sledgehammer is essential for you, then concentrate on getting a reliable car then head for mccoys set up a temporary camp and renew your search.

I've found one once, it was a memorable day. Too bad I died soon after because it happened at that moment when you've just finished "learning how to play" and then begins to actually learn how to survive

I play on insanely rare loot, so it may not be representative of your experience of not finding x or y, but on normal loot settings your absolute best chance is factory crates.

As for battery chargers, visit auto-repair shops. The one down by west point south is not extremely hard to hit up, and on normal you are near guaranteed a battery charger.

That said, i also recommend you play with common sense mod on, which makes the pry bar a potential replacement for the purpose of opening stuff (% chance dependant on strength and consumes endurance.) That leaves the sledge as a long term goal for stairs deletion and base editing pretty much.

One thing you need to understand however is that this game requires and expects you to travel to other cities to hit points of interests up. Not finding everything you possibly need in Riverside is rare, but can happen. Take a look at the map and pick your next adventure :)

I have a pretty much 100% success rate with sledgehammers just by driving around the map. I always find that one vehicle story where there's a sledge just laying on the road.

Failing that, it really isn't all that rare. Big warehouses are everywhere and there's usually sledges in those. Pawn shops have a solid chance of having them too, and any random garage at any random house also can have them.

But as it happens, RNG will RNG.

I mean, what's the problem? Not having a sledgehammer isn't that big of an issue, no?
The only reason I can think of on why you'd want one is to blow a wall open to connect multiple adjacent houses. Like in March Ridge or the apartments above Rosewood's and West Point's shopping area.

You'd mainly want a sledgehammer to destroy the stairs you built in order to plumb most bases. Rest of it would be cosmetic. That and and easy way in pawnshop like locations.

Correct. Some gun spots need to be sledgehammered, others can be glitched into with the PZ rooftile bugs.
I also like busting out the walls to the Louisville PDs for easier access to the ammo and guns.

Tbh there should be static spawn for sledges like in warehouses, that ♥♥♥♥ is too important. I mean it never really happenned to me when i need a sledge i get it but it can happen that you can never find one in the city you are at. I mean next big update is probably fixing this with Blacksmithing and all.

Static spawns in an otherwise procedural game are a horrible idea.

But yeah, craftable sledgehammers will probably be a thing in B42, which is coming next year (maybe).

I mean sure, but semi static in a form of pity spawn could be an idea if you exhausted everything.

yeah, static spawns of chase items would be a terrible idea for the game.
just keep looking, look elsewhere, look harder. Assuming you play on normal population/loot settings, you reach a point where 6 days in you're already equipped with a fuel generator, all books and all tools as it is. No need to make that even more boring by guaranteed spawns.

Besides, as it is right now, Assuming you've enough knowledge of the main cities, everything is pretty much garanteed to spawn for you provided that you're willing to stop moaning about a generator book/sledge not appearing in the 40% of the p.o.i you've visited in your starter town, and drive off to other cities.

Muldraugh, Rosewood and March ridge are all in less of a day's drive distance of each other by the main roads. Muldraugh has a wealth of factory loot. Rosewood has a bit of everything and is tiny and easily cleared in a couple days. and March Ridge has every skillbook you can think of and a VHS store.

If you're in Riverside, and by some duckery of the RNG gods you don't have everything handed to you in a package, just drive around like it's been said, either until you find the random pickup truck story with sledges in the trunk or on the floor. Or to another city.

1. factories
2. Garages and industrial loot containers in large houses (which riverside got a bunch of)
3. Survivor Boarded homes
4. Random stories from annotated maps.
5. Repair Truck wreck story.

Besides, a sledge does not make or break a run. Not even a generator book does. Play long enough and you will eventually find both.

At the moment the game has very little to offer to you to keep playing it once you acquire all the chase tools/items and are done with your base. I'd argue the chase is all that there is currently, until post end game goals/game loops are added.

Map's big, hf, explore.

I like that about the game, the rng, and some things being extremely rare, It makes the game fun and gives me little goals. And considering how op the sledge hammer is anyways i wouldnt have expected anything less.

I think i spent like 2 weeks looking for a can opener once, I'm not even going to talk about a generator magazine. But sledgehammers I have really never had any issue finding them at warehouses, that is really a unlucky trait lol.
