Time to load from booting to gameplay
How long does your game take to load? I mean the whole process from launching the game from Steam to being able to actually play your character in-game? On my potato-ish gaming laptop it is roughly 10 minutes with mods... THIS IS FINE... (yeah, a meme, but the game is worth the wait, should have never bought a laptop in the first place)

I still have just a hdd on my pc.
It is a looooong time from point A to point B for anything I want to compute, starting from power on.

Like 5 seconds, but I have no mods, on an SSD using Linux and the GOG version of the game. Last time I had like 50ish mods it's was maybe 2-3 seconds more.

I only have a toaster to play the game on. I don't have any difficulties playing small maps like Kingsmouth or Studio. But if I go back to my long-term Kentucky, boy oh boy. 10 minutes sounds like a decent ballpark from launching the game to getting to play the game.

Even ~10 years ago, on a 2007 PC, the game loaded in like ~60 seconds.
10 minutes means you need to uninstall some mods, because good god that is insane.

With an SSD, on an outdated laptop, the game loads in like 30 seconds.

It loaded a few good minutes without mods (maybe 6-7 if I recall correctly, at best 5-6 minutes), this HDD feels even slower than my previous computer (yes, a PC, not a laptop) from 2007 had. It has, in theory, decent specs but at times feels barely equal or inferior to that PC, although it supports 4K and up to (rather smooth and rather stable) 60 FPS in Terraria (from GOG), so... THIS IS FINE... Heck, even Oblivion seems to run worse than my old PC (but I play it now in 1080p with best settings and get decently stable/good 60 FPS (but not all of the time), so maybe I shouldn't really complain as I tend to play on higher resolutions than in the past, and on a TV screen, not a monitor). Oh, and my current gear (the laptop) is 5-6 years old and still running. So, maybe, after all, it's overall better.

Possibly time to execute a Defragmentation of the HDD?

I think 10 minutes sounds over the top even for a slow HDD laptop? Could it be a warning that it is going to break soon? HDD that has failures can cause massive slowdowns at first and can be an early warning.

For me is less than 15 seconds to main menu, then less than 15 seconds from load until I can "Click to start" and play. I have a bunch of mods also, but my SSD drive is a high quality very fast one and my CPU iand GPU s high end too. These are my specs if you can use the info:

SSD: Kingston FURY Renegade PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD
CPU: 13th gen Intel i7-13700KF
GPU: Nvidia RTX 3070 12GB

Mod list:
CDDA Zombies
Repair Any Clothes
Item Tweaker API - Still works in Build 41.78
The Workshop
More Description for Traits [41.78]
'86 Oshkosh P19A + Military Trailers
More Zombie Death Animations
Jump
TchernoLib
Brita's Armor Pack
Bow and Arrow
KillCount
Brita's Weapon Pack
Immersive Solar Arrays
Rebalanced Calorie Burning
More Traits
Mod Options (Build 41)
Let Me Think - Open Menus and Queue Tasks While Paused [41.66+]
Foraging Buff (Sandbox Setting Supported)
Food Expiration Date and Bar
Zombie Loot
Insect Ingredients
50% Wood Weight
I Don't Need A Lighter
Just Throw Them Out The Window
Better Sorting
Disassemble Container With Items
More Simple Traits (MST)
Dynamic Traits
Jarring Made Easy

I haven't tried a manual defragmentation in a long while, but I think one of my programs does it more or less regularly. I can try to run and check that myself. Anyway, the HDD is some sort of no-name hardware when my software shows the specs. It has one TB of data capacity and currently I'm not even using half of it but it has never been a fast one. The system seems to speed up somewhat (for some time) when I clear up some space though. Once everything loads, games run generally okay.

My laptop is way lower in the ranks of gaming hardware. It does not have an SSD (it has that infamous HDD model instead, I know fast HDDs exist, I won't buy a laptop again). CPU is Intel i5-something (rather one of the higher numbers, can check it later), and GPU is Nvidia 1050 something (also don't remember exactly). RAM is 8GB (unless my own memory really fails me).

All in all, I agree that 10 minute load time is insane.

After it goes to the black load screen, takes about 20 seconds (count down from 10 to 1 back up to 5 and down again to 0) and 10-15 seconds (count down from 10 to 1 up to 5) after clicking any button to continue.

I'm beginning to think that either my hardware is ancient or people simply have modern PCs at homes to play games.

Couldn’t post my specs because I’m at work right now, but yeah, my PC was built to play Starfield at highest settings… so there’s that.

About approx 1to 2 to load screen then 10 minutes for current playthrough but I am using probably 150 or so mods lol.
DivineEvil Feb 21, 2024 @ 12:14pm
I play with a shared HDD, i5-3450 3.10 GHz with 24Gb RAM. I don't run any mods.
It takes about 20 sec to boot up the game and about 15 sec to load the save.

It's the mods.
On a 2013 i5 laptop with 8 gigs of ram, the game loads in a matter of seconds. But even before i stuck an SSD in it a few years ago, it still loaded in under a minute.

Uninstall the mods, reinstall the game, start a new save, and you'll see a major difference.

There might be some truth to that. I played on vanilla configuration before I went to browse and install mods, the game ran okay back then. Don't remember how long exactly it loaded, but I doubt it was ever that quick. Definitely quicker than now though.

I have a double digit number of map mods (including Raven Creek), plus a decent number of other mods (including Brita's weapons and armour). The trick is, the game runs fine once it loads, just the loading time roughly/almost doubled, compared to vanilla. The vanilla load time was also long.

Anyways, I've recently started deleting unnecessary files on my HDD, both large and small, and, unless I'm imagining things, I've already started to see a slight improvement in performance. Maybe I just have too many files on my HDD. I will continue my cleaning of virtual space. I'll use such drastic means (as reinstalling the game) as a last resort. Old games seem to run without significant issues, on the other hand (2006/2007 and older). Don't know how much HDD wear is a factor as I admit to regular, at times heavy, use of my laptop on almost everyday basis over 5-6 years of my ownership. Besides, I have at least a double digit number of programs (including games) installed on it.
