What? Spiked bat has terrible durability. It has a base 1 in 10 chance to lose durability per hit. The Crowbar has a base 1 in 70 chance to lose durability per hit, it's the most durable weapon in the game by far.
Nightstick / hand axe for one handed, take both, knock em' down then hit their head with an axe.
Pickaxe / Crowbar for two handed, crowbar trains maintenance if you find a pickaxe ♥♥♥♥ slaps.
The best ranged weapon vanilla is a JS2000 shotgun, there is no better tool for clearing hordes. Ammo is generally plentiful when you know where gun spawns are.
Level 1 is like already max 1-2-3 swings to kill an enemy. No other weapon (beside spear and short blade instakill) is like that.
Later on with gaining levels and skill fireman axe also does the same, 1 swing one dead zombie.
One thing to remember all "slashing" and stabbing weapons will damage clothing.
You guys need to work on your pull out game, that will get in you in kind of trouble :D
I personally never had the problem of getting stuck in animation for too long, but spears would be even better weapons without the skull stabbing animation. Charging can also get you killed if you try to run away or past zombies. Both are more troublesome than useful.
The crowbar, for example, is an excellent weapon to have to train your long blunt and maintenance skills because it is extremely durable and very effective. But it is outclassed in endurance (stamina?) consumption by the baseball bat.
Spears are (relatively) very easy to mass produce if you've got the foraging skill and you can't find other good weapons while being very -very- lethal even without the one hit kill mechanic. Crafting them even boosts your Carpentry! They suffer horribly from durability, though, and work best -after- you've raised maintenance (and even better after you raise their own skill) a bit.
Nightstick is super effective for short blunt class as well but it suffers from the inability to be repaired.
I'm not a huge fan of blades for combat but a well used hunting knife is also quite potent.
And you really can't go wrong with a fire axe if you find one to just swing around. Although when you're just starting to find axes you may want to save them for tree chopping.
Get short blades to level 7 and decimate all them hordes. Is all i can tell you. (I can decimate them from level 2, but i am a short blade user. )
Guns: shotguns
with mods ...much more XD
Wait if you put a hunting knife on a spear, does it last LONGER? Does it last a long as the attached weapon usually does?
Yes. Attached weapon durability does matter.
Allthough it is a waste to use hunting knives for this. If you FIND a spear though with a hunting knife attached it is acceptable. But i would never attach a hunting knife to make a spear willingly in the game. (Because i am much better with hunting knives than with spears:) )
I think the game does a 'proximity check' to see if any zombies are nearby that would cause you to get bit if you did a "spear crit instakill" animation. If no, you do it.
Standing still does seem to help though.
