What's the best melee weapon, what's the best ranged?
I cant find decent info on this so I thought I;d get peoples opinions. Personally I'm finding the metal bar to be far the best, as it can be used well on multiples one handed. But it's also a building material so maybe I should be keeping them back for that? Spears seem great but just break to quickly.

Also just as a side, what guns are worth (never) using?

One handed: Nightstick
Two handed: Crowbar

Guns: Don't
the metalbar seems to do what the Nightsick does but with longer range and can hit multiples, am i missing a hidden advantages of the nightstick?
All the end tier onehanded weapons are nearly identical stat wise (nightstick, metal bar, lead pipe). Technically though, going off wiki stats, lead pipe is the best in the game. Doesn't matter either way since one handed weapons always break so quickly, you'll go through them all.

Low damage? They're 3rd high in two handed blunt only beaten by spiked bat and barbell.

Relatively spoken of couse ;)

Blunt weapons aren't the best in damage per swing to begin with.
You speak the truth, strong point of blunt weapon is it's easy to find and not damage zombie's clothes. If multi-hit is enabled it can be used as crowd control which is a plus, but in term of damage it's mediocre if compare to other weapon type.

Metal bar has almost half the durability of the night stick. Although I retract the crowbar statement. Spiked baseball bat has just as much durability as crowbar but more damage.

What? Spiked bat has terrible durability. It has a base 1 in 10 chance to lose durability per hit. The Crowbar has a base 1 in 70 chance to lose durability per hit, it's the most durable weapon in the game by far.

Nightstick / hand axe for one handed, take both, knock em' down then hit their head with an axe.

Pickaxe / Crowbar for two handed, crowbar trains maintenance if you find a pickaxe ♥♥♥♥ slaps.

The best ranged weapon vanilla is a JS2000 shotgun, there is no better tool for clearing hordes. Ammo is generally plentiful when you know where gun spawns are.

Axes damage clothing which is something to consider.
Nordil(Hun) 2022 年 1 月 31 日 下午 11:02
Katana.
Level 1 is like already max 1-2-3 swings to kill an enemy. No other weapon (beside spear and short blade instakill) is like that.
Later on with gaining levels and skill fireman axe also does the same, 1 swing one dead zombie.
One thing to remember all "slashing" and stabbing weapons will damage clothing.

NOT spears. Spears are a liability against more than a single zombie -- get a 'critical' zed hit, and you get rooted while it plays the skull-skewer animation. And it lasts more than enough time to get mobbed or bitten.

Anyone who thinks spears are good weapons hasn't had one get them killed. Yet.
Isn't it that if you keep moving (e.g. kiting backwards) you will never have that critical animation play? I only seem to get it when standing still and making an attack.

I still get crit hit while moving, it's just happen a lot less frequent.

You guys need to work on your pull out game, that will get in you in kind of trouble :D

I personally never had the problem of getting stuck in animation for too long, but spears would be even better weapons without the skull stabbing animation. Charging can also get you killed if you try to run away or past zombies. Both are more troublesome than useful.

I think you can see that the take away from this topic is that it really depends on what you want.

The crowbar, for example, is an excellent weapon to have to train your long blunt and maintenance skills because it is extremely durable and very effective. But it is outclassed in endurance (stamina?) consumption by the baseball bat.

Spears are (relatively) very easy to mass produce if you've got the foraging skill and you can't find other good weapons while being very -very- lethal even without the one hit kill mechanic. Crafting them even boosts your Carpentry! They suffer horribly from durability, though, and work best -after- you've raised maintenance (and even better after you raise their own skill) a bit.

Nightstick is super effective for short blunt class as well but it suffers from the inability to be repaired.

I'm not a huge fan of blades for combat but a well used hunting knife is also quite potent.

And you really can't go wrong with a fire axe if you find one to just swing around. Although when you're just starting to find axes you may want to save them for tree chopping.

Get short blades to level 7 and decimate all them hordes. Is all i can tell you. (I can decimate them from level 2, but i am a short blade user. )

Spears are the best melee weapons overall imo. Crafted spear break easily without some advanced skills but that's what spears with attached weapons are for.

Wait if you put a hunting knife on a spear, does it last LONGER? Does it last a long as the attached weapon usually does?

Yes. Attached weapon durability does matter.
Allthough it is a waste to use hunting knives for this. If you FIND a spear though with a hunting knife attached it is acceptable. But i would never attach a hunting knife to make a spear willingly in the game. (Because i am much better with hunting knives than with spears:) )

You can still get them while moving.
I think the game does a 'proximity check' to see if any zombies are nearby that would cause you to get bit if you did a "spear crit instakill" animation. If no, you do it.
Standing still does seem to help though.
