I always carried loads of tools and supplies with me everywhere. Ammo, healing items, food, and I always had issues finding certain things in all the various packs and belts on me, or the dozens of dufflebags, crates and shelves in my base, not to mention I had little carry capacity to spare for loot.
However, a few days ago I thought to my self "Do I really need a crowbar on me at all times?", "Do I really need all these bandages, alcoholic wipes 24/7 in my pack?", "Is there any reason to store 23 boxes of nails in my base?".
If you take a moment to think about what you actually need to carry on a daily basis, and how much of the loot you find you will need and have a use for in the immediate future, you'll find it's actually not that much. And if you don't carry a small armies worth of gear, suddenly organizing what you do have becomes much more manageable.
Now, I'm not saying there shouldn't be better organizing options, but if you can break away from the usual gamer reaction of grabbing everything that isn't nailed down (or even things that are, with carpentry), it can make things a lot more easy on yourself.
Ok, so I just went in to the game to see how it worked.
"Category" puts your inventory in to "Item, Weapon, Food" sub-categories.
"Type" puts your inventory in alphabetical order.
If you look closely to the left of "Type" there are three additional buttons. The 3rd from the left puts your inventory in descending or ascending weight.
Hope that clears it up for you
