How will fire work underground in the new release
Will its spread and oxygen depletion be impacted by being underground or fire mechanics remain the same as above-ground?

Interesting; if the wooden or metal stairs burn/melt in the fire would there be any other way to get out of a sub-sub-sub+-basement?

no, probably

Until a dev lets us in on the secret, we won't know how underground fire is handled.

Insight would be cool indeed, but they have only fed us tidbits and tiny peeks.

Relearning the game mechanics will be nice, to see what all is what and how things are getting resolved code wise. I look forward to checking it out.

I hope there's smoke inhalation and oxygen mechanics yeah it would be pretty cool. They'll need "framework" or whatever to allow gas and particle dissipation if they did that though, but that'd go a long way to immersifying up the game. I'd enjoy it. Then they could adapt it for things like smell for NPCs and zombies, so they can be drawn by your delicious steak dinner, or rotstink from all of the corpses in your front garden.

We just need to wait for the devs to add functional mantling and climbing. There's no reason you shouldn't be able to pile up a bunch of crates and then climb up them like stairs, or something like that.

Assuming they don't explode into fragments because you failed the dice roll anyway.

Of course, if you don't have any crates or objects to move around while down there, then yeah. Screwed. Better hope there's an NPC around and they somehow have the AI to be able to create and place a climbing rope :winter2019surprisedsnowman:

Oooh that's a great idea, and I wonder if it might not be too difficult to implement.

Air toxicity already exists in PZ on a basic level, with carbon monoxide poisoning from running generators indoors. I think this mechanic could be used for indoor fires as well, and especially in basements or sub-levels without windows.

I'd love to see underground sections of industrial buildings with just purely toxic air, too. No fires or generators running, just toxic trapped gas that's filled sections of underground corridors in old abandoned factories or whatever.

This is a very real danger for IRL spelunkers and urban explorers, without proper precautions you can put your life at risk entering the wrong areas. It'd be cool to see this feature added to PZ at some point down the line when we have sub-levels in game, either officially or through a mod.

Players could mitigate dangers of toxic air in underground sections by wearing a gas mask, and perhaps clever modders could expand this system to include things like consumable filters or different mask types for different levels of air filtration... lots of possibilities

I believe working scuba equipment (mask + scuba oxygen tank) is part of the coming update.
This will make future characters immune to generator fumes.
Adding trapped toxic gases as an invisible danger would just add to that.
