Five years ago it was an extremely basic tech demo developed by two guys sharing an apartment and working odd jobs to make ends meet. It was built up over a couple years until it was in a decent enough state to put on Steam, where sales skyrocketed and they could actually afford to hire people. Almost ninety percent of all development has occured in the two years time since PZ came to Steam thanks to the extra team members. Two years isn't really enough time to make a game even with the expanded development team, unfortunately.

tl;dr
Game development is a long, expensive and difficult process. "Almost 5 years" isn't really that long a development time for a team this small.

Been a supporter of this since the very start, checking on it every time I remember it exists (every 4-7 months).
I kinda lost hope it would ever get a finished release.

What's even more sad is that back then, 5 years ago, I really wanted a good zombie game, plus with decent survival mechanics, so this seemed incredible and I immediately jumped on it.
Now with the massive flood of both zombie and survival games, even if this does get released, it's far too late for me to really care :/

Opposite for me, more and more interesting features added to this game brought me here, when I finally bought this I was satisfied, I do whine about some stuff in discussions but overally I like this game a lot.

Because game developing takes time, you never know what happends and how long it will take to finish several features....

I can name 5 games off the top of my head that are still in alpha state and have been in development longer than Zomboid, still in active development too.

You including Sims 4 on that list? I would. :steamsalty:

I bought this back in 2011 and forgot about it after thinking it would never get finished. I played it for the first time again on Friday and it is an amazing game.

So completely disagree with your opinion. The game is amazing and has made leaps and bounds since I first saw it in 2011.

I do miss starting in office complexes instead of residential districts sometimes... and the old pushable green trash bins for hauling loot.

What I miss most is the little introduction story where I could smother my injured wife.

Ah, Kate and Baldspot...

I remember accidentally smothering Kate when it first came out because I figured giving her a pillow would make her more comfortable... oh, the horror of realizing what I'd just done (the humor followed afterwards... :bandit:)

hope they bring story mode to this game, besides the sandbox survival :)

Project Zomboid's scope is... Quite frankly overly ambitious, to the point where a comparison to Dwarf Fortress isn't too out there. The eventual planned state of the game, as I understand it, is something that a mainstream game development studio would have a hard time with, and would end up cutting features out of the final product to make a deadline. I'd be a bit surprised if the game get's finished within the next two years.

I'm fine with that. After all, Dwarf Fortress is also still in active development.

Dwarf Fortress is never going to be done until the game copies reality down to the point that Dwarf's can learn to split the atom ingame.
