If you're not having a safe house, get a barbeque or materials for campfires for cooking and sterilising water - optionally get a car to carry materials and extra water so you have what you need, so you're not forced to forage for items on a rainy day.
Since the power outage can and will happen when you sleep, i found it's quite handy to turn your generator on ahead of time so that you don't needlessly expend food shelf time because you were taking a snooze when the bzzt happened.
You don't have to be at home to track that broadcast, you can listen to it on your car's radio, or on a walkie talkie in your inventory. And if you have a headset you can listen to it without risking attracting zombles.
No way! That's pretty cool >: ] I did not know that. MY fuel is going to stretch so far now! Thanks for the tip it will be greatly used and abused :)
There's a sandbox setting that can alter the amount of fuel various items use, motor vehicals and generators are among them.
One of them being a very unknown little weather mod that allows you to adjust temperatures AND downpour per month in the mod settings (can look it up if you want), and then you have periodical goals, like;
- Before summer make sure you have your house walled off, and got your 'to-do's in order, because you're not gonna be running around outside a lot. Same goes for winter btw.
- You're gonna need an inside garage for mechanics, build that.
- You're gonna need an upstairs 'chill-out' (literally) because it's cooler there in summer.
- You're gonna need water supplies (Raincatchers, Well, plumbing stuff)
- You're gonna need power supplies (Generator + Solar Panels)
- You're gonna need food and drinkable water sources
- Might want to build a semi-indoor farm (makes sure no ceilings above crops for sunlight)
- Plan for Fishing cabins
- Plan for Hunting Trips
- Fuel Storage (Mostly barrels, but a tanker vehicle is usefull too)
- Build Warehouse with cooled storing compartment full of fridges
- Carparking (for excess vehicles/mechanics)
- Some interior decoration (I'm living in a pretty pink palace suitable for a gigachad)
- Build a little watchtower (with airconditioning and supplies to stake out)
- Medical Station
- Organize your various types of trips/loadouts for quick gearing up. (Hunting stuff and vehicle for hunting. Exploration loadout. Quick Trip loadouts etc).
- etc.
I've been playing for I think 1,5 month on my current save (real-time). I got my base secured with a gate. I got a garage with cars. I got the Airconditioning (mod) installed. Got a well for some easy water to drink. Got a little farmplot (just starting out, but plannign to build a large greenhouse). Got an armory. Working on procuring stuff to build a lab (Biochemistry mod). Done with initial Carpentry, Metalworking and got Electrics at lv4 (need 6). All at 50% xp rate (twice as slow). I also got a large truck with a Trailer. Got a few other cars, including an RV with interior mod for long trips. The heat of summer is intense with the monthly weather mod, but it's satisfying to see the end nearing and still looking back at getting something done (you're gonna need better heater/cooler mod in your car) this last month of the game. I leveled quite a bit in mechanics, and have been doing quick runs to gather some missing supplies. Games gud.
In general. It's pretty fking immersive as a whole :)
4hr day cycle. In-game time spent about 3 months. Best playthrough yet (1000h+)
For me, the lead-up to the shut-off is very anxious, because in most circumstances, you never know exactly when the failure is gonna start. Everything is about getting prepared for the blackout. Even with 3 hour days, there never seems to be enough time in a day to get everything done.
Then when it finally happens, provided you managed to get ready for it, it's almost like a sigh of relief. Now you don't have to rush around anymore if you don't want to. Life kinda slows down and the game gets more relaxing.
Maybe that's not everyone else's experience, but..
