Project Zomboid

Map changes in build 42
Since they're adding new features such as basements, taller buildings, etc if I update my game can I still play older games I've made with some of the new features (obvs maybe not basements per se) but maybe like the npcs and new items

Old savegames will not be compatible with Build 42.
Build 42 will live on the beta branch for a decent while, so people will have plenty of time to finish their savegames if they so desire.

How do people even do that... I mean surely it gets boring after 2 years?

You can actually stay on the current branch, without the need to update, so you can continue to play.
However if you want to play the new version as well, well...that will be though:P Probably a second copy is needed, would be the simplest.

The day build 42 release, is the day my saves wipe.

I don't love my characters enough to allow them to live in the old world.

My Character: "What?!? I've got three years on that server, multiple bases and I'm not..."

Poof. Bye.

"Hello new guy. Lets see what we can do with new toy."

Well, I'm one of the few rare players that actually runs permanent characters. A bit of a legacy thing I brought over from Dungeons & Dragons, while everybody swaps and experiments like crazy I stick to a couple of permanent characters and upgrade them as necessary.

As for the Project Zomboid Build41 issue...
I started the Project Zomboid Solitude series with a goal of surviving for as long as possible, to set the record. Given that my character (Princess) won't be able to upgrade to build 42, I'm going to burn through my supplies and speed things up as much as I can.

Hopefully Build 42 doesn't arrive in the near future, I will try my best to reach 10 years of surviving and then draw the line there, then reset Princess in Build 42 and go on from there.

Maybe for Christmas, who knows ! If I remember correctly, the beta for the build 41 was also made available during december.

They said elsewhere it's not this year and that it is several months away from hitting beta.

Same way you opt into the unstable and all the previous legacy branches.
