Bring water, food, a spare weapon. Take notes on what you want to do, because getting sidetracked while out is super duper easy.
Might not always make it back to base when you planned. Change your plans when that happens.
To do list:
welders mask. lug wrench. rubber duck. shotgun shells. die. look for pie. black curtains. red stove. another rubber duck. dog house.
If you have a vehicle:
Consider keeping in the glove box: can opener, empty mug, coffee, vitamins, disinfectant, bandages (preferably sterilized) ..
never fails; you get hungry on the road and find cans but no can opener. If you start to get tired before you can make it home, blast a few cups of coffee.. better hot but does the trick cold.. vitamins to supplement the coffee. Getting forced to fight tired can be a death sentence.
Should always keep alcohol wipes and bandages in a fanny pack, but if you sustain more than one injury, or get stuck somewhere and need to change bandages, it helps to have extra.
Keep at least one gas can in the car, so you can siphon from other vehicles in a pinch. If you have room, keep a jack, lug wrench, wrench and screwdriver, if you plan on doing any car salvaging. If your car has really bad tires (like under 25%) plan on getting a flat.
If you don't have a vehicle: same stuff in the backpack, but skip the mug and coffee since you shouldn't be going too far from home anyway. And obviously skip the car tools. But best to get a vehicle so you can loot more than a backpack and go further from home.
Another good thing about vehicles is you can figure out what is absolutely necessary for the current task and leave the extra stuff in the car. Making a swift escape is easier when you're not extremely over encumbered.
This is the intended experience. Toothpaste and soap are useless. Embrace the chaos.
