is it better to start with stakes or spears?
I know spears are probably better, but is it better to make stakes when you start the game? maybe you get more bang for the value with the trade off of safety?

Crowbars!

Spears if you want to be meta about it. Unless you're a lumberjack then try and make stone axes.

every weapon in the game has advantages and disadvantage, for example the spears you mentioned allows for low risk kills with a few zombies, but due to its delay make's it a questionable choice when dealing with hoards since zombies don't wait for you to finish you're animation when you are stunning/killing one zombie. While crowbars are very effective the difficult level is doesn't change much when you are dealing with 2 to 16 zombies.

The best use I've found for spears is stabbing zombies through fences and jail cells.

i really wouldnt say spears are meta. i know way more people that use all the other weapons except long blade more then spears

Spears if you want the meta. Specifically the pitchfork.

Spears can fish, they're the ONLY weapon that can reliably instant kill any zombie at full exhaustion, if you're walking backwards you won't get stuck in the animation like some non-spear users will try to tell you, you can easily craft many of them and they're infinite, they're fast and they're also very great even vs sprinters. You can also use spears through fences unlike any other weapon, also they have good length compared to other weapons. Pitchfork can also be used for gardens.

Yes Spears are the absolute best weapon. Machete being second since it can be repaired, katana third since it can't be repaired.

Pitchfork
Regular Spear
Machete
Katana
Axe
(All the rest)

If you want their clothes just stomp on their head.

Game mechanics wise if you're playing with the meta, spears are without a doubt the best weapon no exceptions. However, play whatever is fun for you. I like playing short blade because stabbing things is fun, however with short blade if you get an arm wounded you'll swing too slow for it to be reliable and you can easily die since you gave up your reach for speed. The insta kills with short blade aren't good like they used to be, but you can insta stab every single zombie that climbs through a window or fence if you time it right.

Crowbar is fun, axe is fun, short blunt is fun as well, I recommend what you find the most fun, I even like smashing some zombie heads with the guitar, despite how slow it is.

Spears but duct tape can be elusive, and they break a lot. I find metal bars way more abundant.

Have you tried 3+ carpentry and 4+ matinence with spears? They last a long while. Regular spears can't be repaired with tape, just pitchforks.

I have to admit smashing zombie heads with a metal bar while they're laying on the ground is the best feeling though 😄

I'm at the stage of the game where the only thing I'm really trying is not to die again. I am at carpentry 3ish because the tv carried me there but maintenance is only at 1. They just seem to break faster than other weapons, but maybe that's confirmation bias from playing games that hate spears having durability.

edit: nope, just had 3 spears in a row break. never taking those out again that wasted an entire day.

a stake is for making a tent
Why not make a stone knife?

Axe with Axeman is the best if he has no panic trait is brave. it seem to just one shot every zombie even with the crappest axe lol
As long as no panic of course.

It seem with the axeman that its so good, that why do you need skill? all you need is +1 axe an axeman. You don't need level 10 on it. Its overkill.

I d k

i think stakes maybe theres a strategy to it, its just they seem too weak and worthless to me. A spear guarantees you a quick kill at least.

Stake hm. There could only be one instance where you make it in an emergency
zverozvero Nov 1, 2023 @ 8:21am
Stake is essentially knife meaning shortest range and chin-stab move on unaware or staggered zombie.
Spear is 2-handed weapon with high range and damage.

Both break fairly fast till carpentry and maintenance grows a bit. I take spears cause kniffs give me severe skill isue and i get scratched or bitten trying to pull out cheeky assasination.
Also good luck fighting 10+ zombies with short weapon. Splitting 1 far enough from the mob to stab safely takes time.

Stamina use though might be very different which can matter.
Also fighting lot of zombies with short weapons, especially short blades is entirely doable it just requires practice, to get the skills required. Short blade users can fight till they get tired, while spear users can fight till they get exhausted. Also if you are tired you can chug vitamins, tea coffee. If you are exhausted you need to rest a bit. Or you can mix the two use the spears till you get the first exhau moodle, then switch to short blade(stake) to regain stamina. Is a viable strategy.

I would say both weapons are useable and it depends on the situation which one you should prefer.
Animalman Nov 1, 2023 @ 9:25am
stake weighs 0.3

stone knife 0.75 does more damage has more condition

Stake i guess in that sense u can bring 2 stakes on the belt will be better than 1 stone knife. cheaper weight.

hm.
if Stake is the disposable weapon, the knife is the tool to keep.

hmmm
i think i will try a bag of stakes. Constantly forage for branch.

It is doable just less simple with shorter range. Some one-hander is good to have when flashlight or backpack is in off hand but I prefere short blunt weapons cause hammer is utility and nightstick is knockback.

I usually fight with whatever i find first, if not i just go with push and stomp.
The thing is i would love to use nightstick consistently as it is a very good weapon, but i cannot keep up with the stamina drain most of the time. (0/0 str and fitness starting character), and the zombie population is enourmous with my settings. So depends on the situation if i engage or i just move away to return a later time or lead them away.
Sometimes not fighting is the correct choice:)
