Mysterious Gunshots?
So I'm playing some single player zomboid, totally vanilla, and I hear gunshots nearby. Is this a random event or something? I'm pretty confused to say the least, it happened on the second day if that changes anything.

Unfortunately I died(unrelated) but I'm still curious if anyone else has seen this.

It's a meta event, It just lures zombies in a wide area in the general direction of the shot.

They are called meta events. Basically it's just to give the impression you are not the only one in the world, and they move zombies around a bit.

There is nothing you would have found if you followed the sound.

Ah okay so I guess the horde I died to wasn't unrelated after all. Thanks!

among the other things you can hear are: people screaming horrifically, animal noises, and occasionally (and arguably the worst...) the helicopter!

I think sometimes you can find bodies and blood if you go and investigate. Hard to tell if it's from that particular meta event or some other one that triggered though.

If you ever try out an NPC mod, one way to tell the difference between Meta and real is by how often it occurs. Meta events will only play gunshot sounds once while NPCs will continuously fire their weapon(s) until they either flee or die.

Oh cool I'll keep an ear out, thankfully I haven't gotten the helicopter event yet lol

Is there any chance for useful loot or is it just for immersion? (not that I have a problem with it)

Those bodies Kaldrak mentioned is unrelated to the meta event that has been discussed. If I recall, those bodies are different type of events governed by different game setting and game code.

If you find those bodies inside a house, you can sometimes find guns in their inventory. It's because the person committed sudoku with the gun.

If want to specifically find extra loots, you can try annotated maps instead.

Sudoku, the brain game -- as in, "bullet to the".

It's the bogeyman struggling to open his way through the zombies to find you.

There's a mod for making the meta sound events more immersive that does just that. Following the sound of gunshots might lead you to a guy who died fighting and all his loot, or hearing a car crash will actually spawn one nearby with loot.

the gunshots you heard was a vanilla meta events, there can be gunshots, dogs barking, and people screaming followed by a helicopter event around day 6-8 buts that mainly it in terms of vanilla meta events.

there are mods how ever that add new meta events like the expanded helicopter events that adds a variety of different events that cause horde movement, reactive sound events that play sounds depending on the weather and how aggressive/passive you are with your play style, random sound events: anarchy that adds cars crashing and more, etc. they are really well made and i recommend you check them out.
