You win by being the lone survivor for as long as you can. Boredom kills many after surviving for months on end. As for me, I win by surviving longer than the previous 2 weeks. RIP to the many This is how you died...

Based on what I read a few years ago already ( so maybe it's not planned anymore ), there will be an "end" at some point. Whether it ends your game session or just ends the "main quest" is yet to be known. A story with a couple ( Kate and Bob ) is planned. You will start on one end of the map and will have to reach Louisville to escape. This couple used to be in the game a long long time ago. They are the people you see on the main menu screen. However we have a long way to go before this is done.

That depends upon how you define Win

It can be anything from surviving for a Month, a year, make a self sufficient base, wipe the undead of a respawn disabled save, collect every rare item in the game, etc

By having fun until you ragequit after dying with something extremly stupid or unfair

You cant win, the game tells you when you start. "There is no Hope" "This is how you died"

You win, when you make a mistake and die.

You can give yourself a goal... but otherwise no

You win by clearing out every last zombie on the map. you will die.

but you can re spawn infinite times.
and you can die infinite times.

You technically win by achieving a sustainable food and water source, as well as finding a safe place to live in the midst of farming and collecting water. However, the game doesn't give you a "You win!" screen, so there's no official winning condition.

Since this is a story of your death then I guess you could say a quick death is best. Unless you're a masochist like me, and you try to drag it out as long as possible.
