Project Zomboid

Will the military ever rescue civilians, or exterminate them in hopes to cover up the infestation or end the virus?
I love this game, it is very immersive and realistic for a zombie video game. But it lacks lore-wise that I just cannot really understand.

First off, the military. I do not know if the virus has spread outside of Knox and if so how far. What confuses me is if the virus has spread a distance, how are the radios and televisions still broadcasting. So I will assume it has not spread that far and since helicopters flew through the map.

Containment. Has the military set up checkpoints around however far the virus has spread in attempt to contain it? Do they quarantine civilians? Supposedly a soldier shot some civilians who were possible carriers of the virus. So is the military against people or will they try and rescue them?

I realize the developer stated that the game will not have an ending (excluding death). Personally PZ seems like a glorified zombie survival simulator; I have no issue with that. It would surprise me if the military or something would not try and put a stop to all of it. That being exterminating potential carries and zombies, or rescuing people and maybe quarantining them. With this being set in America, 1993(?) I would also have difficulty believing people (namely media) would accept a military that just sat on their hands, and let such a threat inhabit a state in America. Unless zombies are expected to just perish without food. But if that were the case would they not migrate to another state that contains live humans?

Sorry if there are some errors with whatever, please ignore it. In summary, what role is the military going to play in this event? What are they doing and are going to do in relation to the virus/zombies? Will they ever make a direct appearance in Knox and encounter the player (that being friendly or hostile)? I hope PZ will become more in-depth in the future, lore-wise, as it is in EA.

The world is ♥♥♥♥♥♥. The military is gone. No one will come to the rescue. You are dead.
You aren't going to be some kind of hero that "oooh-la-la, I haz the antibirus. I haz saves world."
You are just some random civilian caught in the middle of the downfall.

That's the tl;dr of the lore basically.
Some folks are immune to the airborne strain, the military are as vulnerable as everyone else.

Untrue, everyone is the hero of their own story.

On a serious note, prob there would be more story than just "ebebody ded", would be plain boring to have no content. I bet surviving military are more inclined to purge than help

The military is alive and it sounds like theyre going to be a massive endgame event something to akin to warhammer 3 or stellaris endgame crises. I would assume theres going to be a ♥♥♥♥ ton of them once they start exterminating you and other survivor groups or else whats the point. Of course it sounds like itll be months or maybe years ingame before they show up

Maybe read the ingame lore (you can find it on the official wiki page)
Military: Gone.
Virus already spread world wide.
Endgame: Devs will never will add something like that. Maybe a modder.

Lol, that "random guy" is the lead npc dev. It’s not random posts it’s him telling us about things he’s been making and what they are planning to release.

How and why would the military be gone? The year being 1990 the military has a lot of technology which it could use to eliminate the living dead rather easily. That being tactical missiles to better attack helicopters and optics.

Good to know that is the lore, but why? How are television and radios still broadcasting including what may be a military broadcast. If zombies took over the world.

They do have CBRN and MOPP which could help the military if they ever were to enter Knox.

Technically you do play as a hero since you have the choice of clearing out entire towns of zombies with guns. But it does make sense for some random person to not know how to make an antivirus, like becoming the leader of something in Skyrim.

The only thing I may know is that the military is either dead from this discussion. Or the military just setup a perimeter to make sure nobody got in or out. (latter seems correct)

The game, by default, starts on July 9th, three days past inital infection and by that time the military already established a camp south of Louisville. Everything south of it was the Exclusion Zone, the place with the dead. On July 11, the military abandoned Fort Knox. On July 14 the Louisville checkpoint was overrun after a soldier fired on a civilian, attracting all the dead. Then the virus became airborne on July 15 and on July 17 it spread across the whole globe. Anyone not immune to the airborne strain was pretty much dead, which includes the military.

A rescue mission would be pointless.

Forget about a rescue mission. Is the military still active? With MOPP and CBRN I would find it difficult for the military to just be wiped out so easily. I mean the entire military, not just a portion or more of it. Is there a possibility of some military being alive?

Now this all is speculation on my part, as I am not aware of how much of the military is left after the virus went airborne. Salt advised.

I personally believe most of the military is dead. Whatever is left of it is probably scattered all across the US, barely hanging in. So it is unlikely they will do much, even with all that fancy tech. The military ceased to exist, its units scattered and uncoordinated.

The only reasonable time for a military intervention is between game start (July 9th) and July 14, although that would require a rewriting of the lore.

As cool as it would be to hide from them, I don't see that coming.

Thanks for clarifying. Personally I still think there would at least be some special detachment or branch that would have some things more coordinated than not. In other words, up and running. Lore-wise the military seemed to put up a very good defense against the zombies until the airborne virus. So maybe there could be an organized group of military remnants?

Yep. This is why I'm modified my post, but looks like you ninjad my original. Don't matter.

To the guy who asks why the television still broadcasting:
If you will survive long enough, you will notice those broadcasts end after few days.
And if you listen to the broadcasts (or read the broadcast wiki on the official page), you can notice when they say all the world is infected, humanity fallen, etc etc .

Sure, there are still separated military groups, some of them could be more less organized, but as the military in it's current form... That's gone.
No government, no leaders, and no rescue.
Anything devs adding, it will be lorewise, and I'm sure Lemmy won't rewrite the lore.
