Does anyone even play legit Apocalypse mode?
Everyone I've seen play Apocalypse mode either uses mods that make the game easier, exploits fences during combat, exploits fires, build bases entirely around exploits in the building mechanics so zombies can't pathfind/damage their stuff.

I'm convinced that no one plays this game legit and cheeses their way through the game experience.

Is this a symptom of bad game design principles? Or the playerbase attempting to convince themselves they got gud?

I do. And I know I can seem like I wouldn't count, but I was a player before moderating and not once (and still don't when I actually play) use mods or anything but the default experience as has been intended. Same as my friend and a few others.

It's obviously hard to gauge, a lot of players use mods for sure, but there's definitely plenty that play it as it is even though you may not see them be the majority publicly on YT/Twitch etc...

I do, its hard, but most of my deaths are because i get overconfidant or surprised, I think its pretty cool buildinding safe houses for your future characters, the only thing that make it actually a nuisance is that you probably only get the tv xp bonuses on your first characters

ive done many an apocalypse runs with no mods. i like to change things up, generally i do a sandbox run with custom settings and mods to try and create a different type of playthrough. Then in the middle of that I always decide to go back for a vanilla apocalypse run. Then i remember all the cool modded stuff i cannot access in the run, and want to start another sandbox. The hardest part is to play each run until death (well, sometime that is not so hard).
Mods/custom settings are more for creating a roleplay experience or to give myself an odd objective to try for.
Apocalypse vanilla to keep me honest.

You okay? What are you even talking about? Do players play this game vanilla? Is that really what you're asking?

Honestly, Most people who exploit all those things have done it the hard way for so long that they got annoyed with the annoyance and tedium of 'doing it the hard way'.

For example, You say "they exploit fires", But they killed tens of thousands of zombies by hand over their career before they said ♥♥♥♥ it, burn the bastards, often because they've ramped the zombie count up from base apocalypse to 16x as many, and it's just a boring slog to kill that many zombies by hand.

You say exploits fences, but since the changes to fence mechanics that both make fallen zombies a threat and gave the fences a durability that could be broken, It's no longer an exploit but a tool in the player's arsenal- The devs could've just as easily made it impossible to use fences to fight zombies. So it's fair game now, imo.

You say build bases entirely around exploits, but frankly, after spending hundreds of hours patrolling my the perimeter area and keeping my base safe and rarely if ever finding any zombies because I've thoroughly cleared the entire area for miles, it's just a nuisance for a single zombie to creep in and break a bunch of my stuff- Not any kind of threat or danger to me. It's a tiresome tedious task and I've put in my time, so I use some building trickery to just have my base be safe and not have to waste time doing boring things when I could be doing fun things instead.

Also alot of the people I've seen playing with mods generally go Harder, Not Easier.

Homie is just mad about something that he died to. He knows the right way to play and everyone else is playing the wrong way. Something to that effect. He's the main character and things aren't adding up, so obviously he's gotta stand up and call us out.

I used to play apoc but it got too easy, there's plenty of mods that make it more difficult. Some that I use are Toxic fog, 10 years later, vaulting zombies/watch the windows, Scent of blood. This with sprinters, insane pop and insanely rare loot makes it more fun, it makes the early game last much longer which is the only good part of pz currently imo.

No, I'm just not looking up any tips/tricks and wanted to watch someone play vanilla apocalypse to kind of compare where I am at in gameplay, but everything I watch is just people exploiting the game in stupid ways that the dev's should've patched out by now.

Apocalypse+ main difference is extremely rare loot, more zombies on peak and longer days. 1h per day is way too fast for my taste

You watching "influencers" and big ones. Look for smaller YTs or streamers they all record everything even game settings and no cuts on videos Zomboid is still playable even ond Zombicide you can survive for quite some time no cheesing just game mechanics

You do realise that there are people who play sandbox and set the game even harder than in Apocalypse, right? Things like less amount of loot or no water nor power from day 0. Why do you even bother about people not playing "the right way" and "avoiding difficulty" when Apocalypse is literally easier than most of the settings people play with? Just play the way you want and let people be.

I do play apo only without mods or any ingame modification. To be honest i wouldnt play any other game mode because once you know what you doing and how zombie work, only zombie respawn and migration or events can really put you into trouble. The learning curve to get there is kinda big tho for some people.

Define "legit".

Mods aside, how is playing a certain way "exploiting" the game?

Are you going to call sneaking around using sound to lure the zombies an exploit too next? How about using shotgun to lure the zombies out of town while picking them off one by one? What of a hit and run with baseball bat? What about those who just want to live in the wilderness away from any zombies?

You expect people would just go run-n-gun at a massive horde of zombies and call it the legit way of playing the game?

Sorry, but this whole topic is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
