Or you can hope someone comes here and posts numbers that are true and not just guessing.
Good luck with your number crunching!
Keep in mind your maintenance level will also affect the results.
Maintenance level 0 will yield different results from level 10 maintenance.
Well yeah i am aware of maintenance effect, in fact its very powerfull and actually kinda easy to level up if you focus on it.
stone axes starting out have some 20-25 kills in them on average on lvl 2 axe and 2 maintenance. But once axe are max with 6-7 maintenance you got like 60 kills pr stone axe. never runs out of weapons, basically just foraging when moving towards next group to the point where you really cant use all those chipped stones :-)
I do think pure axe build could be pretty strong, just pick lumberjack and strong outta the gate and just go ham.
Also, hand axe > axe
Yep thats what i do. its not a big issue even if you cant depend 100% on found axes, stone axes gets the job done quite well, so can always use some of those in between stockpiling axes. havent even factored in reparing weapons once the maintenance level are there. i do like to grind up to lvl 4-5 maintenance (pushing doors) in the early days, as long as i have a safe house doing so, which i have even on max pop.
Good advice didnt know that, but i could feel that they broke quite fast relative to fighting.
I use this one:

However... any weapon you can attach to a spear, you can make last forever, or at least as long as your wood glue and duct tape hold out. Mind you, I never fight with spears, but if I can find 2 or 3 machetes and I keep one spear in inventory to... umm... reset their repaired status, I can make them last forever (again... as long as the wood glue and duct tape holds out)
Edit: also... I'd like to add the Hunting Knives are incredible weapons in their own right with practice and skill. They are fast enough to interupt a zeds attack even if you are late to activate it and though they don't do great damage, again, they do it fast, hitting 4 times in the same time you could swing a fire axe twice.
But what I do know is I killed slightly over 300Zeds with 1Crowbar. There's no way an axe has more durability than a Crowbar, it's made of solid steel. (At that time: 5str, 0Blunt).
Axes do not have more durability than a crowbar, but that doesnt matter if you dont run out of weapons anyway. Kills pr stone axe for me is around 60 with 10 axe, 10 phys, 6-7 maintenance.
I do grind maintenance very early game (pushing doors with an axe my hand).
