why can't i open trunks?

whenever i break into a car and unlocked it, i'll try to open the trunk but it won't let me even. when i have the keys

If you unlocked the trunk via the dashboard, or used a key, the inventory menu won't open automatically when standing by the trunk like it would if you clicked on a cabinet or something. Just hover up above the top right menu for the container loot and it will show the items inside if there are any.

If you are using mods it may be a bug. Haven't had an issue in vanilla.

Also to note, fridges have freezers in them, cars have backseats for storage, you can access them via the right side of the container loot menu as well so pay attention for those things.

there is an icon on dashboard to open the trunk and there are other icons that do other things, easy to miss at first they don't particularly look clickable.
