Walls dampen the noise it makes.
Not sure how big the building was but up on the 5th floor that should reduce it enough.
Self-built attachments don't cause you to suffocate with a generator inside, btw.
My base is at the 4th floor of a tall ravencreek building
It's one with regular flats, on top of a sewing shop. You need to go up some stairs, THEN into the builing, and it's 4 floors on top of the base one, so 5 and it's on the roof...
I built log walls everywhere, changed the corner i put the generator in, and removed stairs, at least now they don't path at all to the entry of the building, but they can stack by dozens the side of the building the generator's at , which is quite annoying when you forget a bit about it
YOU as the player hear a muffled sound, but i'm pretty sure the zombies don't work like that, and even tho the game is pretty impressive simulation wise, i'm pretty sure the noise of the generator is just a tic with a range, and if a zombie stands on a tile that's highlithed by said tic, it makes him go to where the generator is. Since it goes far on one axys, i doubt the other is dfferent, and i'm not going to tr y to make it 20 floors for the sake of testing... (Might not even do anything even)
They just gather at the bottom of the building since i removed the stair, and since an helicopter event happened, and moved a lot of them, there's like 50-75 at the bottom right now... Uhhhh
@Animalman that would only work for like, a moment, as each second i would spend "not" clearing zombies, they'd wander in the area of the generator yet again
Dunno what i'll do, either disable generator noise with a mod, or some trap that'd kill them at the bottom...
I've spend more time killing zombies than anything else in this playthrough, love ravencreek but i didn't get to explore anything at all... Hell, i only have a generator and some fuel because my spawn point was around a lot of garages, with a full canister...
You can build an outer wall around your base about 20+ tiles away from where the generator is. It's to prevent zombies from spawning inside the perimeter and stopping the ones outside from being attracted by the generator's sound.
On my persistent mall playthrough the gennies are set up on the fourth level near the helipad, and because I've destroyed all the stairs there's no pathing. Usually after clearing out about 3k zombies or so you'll get to a point where you can 'morning patrol' it, bash about twenty of them and be on with the rest of your projects. Longer days help A LOT using this strategy, as obviously trying to cut out a lot of dead people from the innards of your building while tired is a bad idea.
If you're getting frustrated and want to punt but not ready to lose the character, try finding a nearby field (in Ravens Creek this might be a challenge) or lot that you don't mind catching on fire, then get a blaze going while inviting all of your guests. You'll lose all the loot they'd be carrying but at least you'd have some peace of mind eventually.
I kinda dislike removing stairs tho, because it's a little bit overpowered.
And it's as overpowered as there are zombies in the place you live at.
Once the entire base of the building is swarming with 200 zombies, when you come back with loot, you realise it's quite an issue.
Just wait at peak population for a helicopter event... Annnnnnnnnd there you go.
Ravencreek? Secure and then build a bridge from a nearby building to your base. Enjoy the ambient background noise of the zeds and never worry about them again.
Noises from inside buildings should be muffled, so maybe it also needs a roof so it counts as a room.
I'd set up a base in the gated community in Rosewood once and had built a 2x2 shack for my generator.
When the shack was complete it seemed to me like the zombies didn't hear it beyond the tall fence anymore.
Before then they're frequently bashing against my gate.
