Do bites always kill you?
If i were to be bitten by a zombie, would bandaging it suffice? or do i need to use disinfectants?

By default setting, being bitten is 100% fatality. You will die then turn into a zombie in couple of days.
You can change the settings from sandbox options. Which eventually effects if zombies can only kill you by damaging and eating you or with a simple bite.

Please check all the negative effects under Sandbox settings.

Many other things about gameplay can be changed (to be much harder oır much easier) through sandbox settings and by downloading fanmade mods for the game.

as others said, with default settings a bite will ultimately kill you as the infection transmission rate for a bite is 100%.

x2, a heroic effort, one last run, a good zombie clearing with a dying yet able to fight character...

Just for the sake of clarification, It's important to note that there is a difference between the attack a zombie makes and a bitten wound; All standing zombies attack by grabbing and attempting to bite the player- This is just an animation that can result in one of 5 things happening
1: You get bitten.
2: You get lacerated.
3: You get scratched.
4: You get damaged, but no wound results because your clothing/armor protected you
5: You shove the zombie away and take no damage.

The Bitten wound, however, is the word 'Bitten' in your health panel- If you receive a Bitten injury in this way, and infection is on, you are infected- It's a 100% zombie infection chance on Bitten wounds, 25% chance for Lacerations, and 7% chance for Scratches.

Also there is a difference between a Wound Infection which shows on the health panel, which can be prevented with disinfectant and changing your dirty bandages before it gets infected; and the Knox Infection which the game never directly informs you if you have it- You gradually just get sick and die. The infection given by zombie bites/lacerates/scratches is the Knox Infection.

You are going to die you can't survive it unless you changed the settings for it

Short Answer: Yes

Long Answer: Well depending upon where the bite is the injury itself won't kill you. Might be a inconvenience if it's on the chest for example while it will kill you very quickly if it happened on the Neck. It's the infection that will get ya in the end however. That is 100% lethality but you have a few days to get your things in order.

What's the point of "getting your things in order" if you're gonna die, might as well restart no?

You can create another character so dying somewhere safe. Or bringing your loot haul back to your base is getting things in order.

Nothing worse than getting killed by your old, zombie self.

Whatever you think you ought to do, that comes back to bite you in the behind, won't always kill you.
Zombie bites are 100% fatal.

I keep reading people saying there's a sandbox setting. I checked the lua file and the ini file, and there's no mention to "bit" or "fatal"... what's the flag name to change it? Is it the blood+saliva vs only-saliva situation?

I don't know the ini settings itself, but if you go ingame click "host" -> "manage settings" -> choose the server's settings name -> "edit settings" -> "Zombie Lore" -> uncheck "Proper Zombies" -> Set "Transmission" to "None"

You can use this menu to alter dedicated (then upload and replacing the ini files), and co-op sessions (just host using that settings file). If you're in singleplayer, start a new save and edit the singleplayer settings via "custom sandbox"

Please note that if you're hosting on a dedicated server/co-op you require a new world for settings to take full affect. Singleplayer I think cannot be changed.

So you're saying it's not looking good for my guy running around with 3 bite wounds 😂
