Project Zomboid

10 FPS.
Undoubtedly a Mod issue.
I've messed around with the settings, without any kind of positive effect.
Or, even a negative one. So, it can't be the settings.

I recall murmurings of modifying a file to allow more RAM/VRAM allocation, which *might* help, but I forget the particulars. Willing to try just about any trick, at this juncture.

To be a bit more clear.
The game runs butter-smooth -- for about a good twenty minutes, maybe more, maybe less. Give or take.

Then it drops down to 10 FPS and it stays there. Naturally, this makes it impossible to actually play.

Which makes me very, very, very [/] sad. Because the game, is fun.

Anyway, I have a couple of ideas, which mods may be the culprit, or not, I am going to experiment with a few things as soon as I put this up.

If you'd like, I can provide my full Mod List for you.

But to carve straight to the heart of all this -- any suggestions would be enormously welcome. I love this game. I'm quite sad that I cannot enjoy it.

Pretty please, help.

Note: This started happening in March. Sometime in March of this year. Don't know the particular date, but there were not any issues before March (of this year.)

Note B: I'd put down my Specs but I feel it would be kind of redundant. As mentioned above, when it runs properly, there's not the faintest hiccup in performance, not even if the most stressful of scenarios; the hardware is fine, more than fine, really. However, should you desire it, I will oblige.

Thank you. I'll be hawking this for any replies.

Do you have npc mod? If you disable all the mods does the issue still continue?
Set your launch options to "-Xmx6024m -Xms6024m" That will set PZ ram limit to 6gb instead of the default cap of 2gb. This insanely helpful when you have a lot of intensive mods.

Not the OP, but will keep this in mind, thanks! (I set mine to 8GB, if I still seem to get FPS drops I'll go up to 16GB, seems like it has cut down on some stuttering though. Hard to tell from 20 minutes of gameplay)

Which NPC Mod? There's two, or three, now, right?
Anyhow - I recall trying them back in the day, some of the earlier builds were A LOT more stable, than they are, now.

I have stopped using ANY NPC Mod, for quite a bit, at this point.
It is a bit sad. They were really fun to mess with - I wonder if I can get them to work, by essentially turning all NPC Settings down, and using Debug to manually spawn groups around the area, in incredibly specific fashion, or maybe just one guy, for a companion experience (I tend to play Solo, have for a while, stuck in my ways).

But, no, I don't use NPC Mods. I've not disabled everything , but I have turned off a couple of very outdated ones - in fact, I pruned a ton of long, well-outdated Mods, currently in a game for about an hour, now, giving it a shot, seeing if any results are produced.

In addition -- I've disabled a few intensive, but generally up-to-date ones, such as the Mod which adds swimming and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ boats (genius, really, I'd love to have fun with it if I can), and Expanded Helicopter Events, including many, many, many accessory Mods which have simply been disabled and were, just, well, never used -- seeing if it does me any good.

I'll let you know.

Thank you.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. :Owl:
Is that a fact? You're not jerking my core, are you? Because if that is true, that sounds immensely helpful.

Update: Been in a new game, with a drastically reduced Mod Load, for an hour and seven minutes. The aforementioned FPS drops tend to happen about twenty, or thirty minutes in, as said in the OP.

So far, consistent 60. Going to keep messing around, and see if it remains this way, for as long as I can tonight - I may have solved it, I know I'm being vague, I just don't want to celebrate too early.

'Will keep you updated, I love you all.

Update: Tried out the RAM thing in the launch options. Immediately, there was noticeable degree of 'smoothness' to the game, so it did seem to help the overall performance. Thanks a ton for the tip.

It is going on 5AM, in my little corner of this cerulean death orb, so I cannot afford to continue troubleshooting.

To the point: After removing several odd dozen unused, or out of date Mods, I no longer dip down to 10FPS after engaging in mundane Zomboid affairs such as, drinking, scavenging, running for your life, that sort of thing, after a brief period of gameplay. Chipping down the Mod Load seemed to help, however, I highly suspect that putting every single possible variable of Expanded Helicopter Events to "Insane", might have had something to do with the FPS drops.

Turned those to off, or to more reasonable levels -- later, I need to try with the same across-board "Insane" settings and see if that replicates the previous issue, but that is a task for, well, when I have the chance. Still, having less loaded, and more RAM to spare, has yielded improvement, even when racing at breakneck speeds across the map, being met with merely the scant loading 'stutter' upon entering a new area - which is fairly typical without Mods, if I remember correctly.

In other words, this may have been the result of my own stupidity the entire time, nonetheless, we are going to better places.

I will do some more test runs next I can, and report back.

Thank you all.
