Since you are in builder mode, spears are more preferable. You can just break a furniture then craft the planks into spears with a knife.
While they are good at killing large amount of Zs if you spend the time gathering them before hand, most beginner would simply grab some, attack with them, break one, fail their attack animation and die from it.
long blunt (crowbar, baseball bat mostly) are the most reliable weapon with a bit of range for beginner. They spawn a bit everywhere because the crowbar is a tool, and also have high durabiliy compared to blade/spear.
As a side note, maybe you didn't learn about it but if you want to do a head shot to a zombie on the ground, you need to either attack it "from behind", or if from the front walk up to his neck and swing way "over" his head. For example, if you use a baseball bat, and when you see the hit animation the end of the baseball bat hit the head - that's a torso hit.
Because you always hit the closest body part to you starting from your own feet, and right now the closest body part is the torso, even if his head in within your reach.
So you need to make sure you walk up to his neck or attack from behind. Save a lot of weapon durability, assuming you aren't stomping him (stomping doesn't give weapon xp, so you might want to use your weapon instead of stomping to grind).
If you want to be fancy tho, you could learn how to kill with short blades. Hunting knife drop from zombies, cost nearly no stamina and can be dealy, just more annoying to use against large hordes.
Crowbar have a low dps & mediocre radius so you need to get used to it first.
BTW each weapon have it own model & animations. It's important - don't rely on auto-targeting, get used to real area of effect of your weapon & swing timers.
Meanwhile i've found countless gun cases with pistols and shotguns in, whereas i always remember guns being much much rarer.
A great semi-common weapon is the meat cleaver: good range, good damage, good durability (10 hp, 1 in 15 chance to degrade). Plus its one-handed, so you can carry a secondary bag without much issue.
Blunt, and blade.
Blunt has less damage and more stagger, blade has more damage and less stagger. Also messes up clothes.
Axes exist, which are a go-between between blunt and bladed.
From there, there's two lengths- long and short.
Long does more damage and stagger but costs more stamina and is slower, short does less damage and stagger but costs less stamina and is faster. I think there's some length differences too.
One handed blade can jaw stab, either randomly (ish) or on sneak shanks.
There are, of course, exceptions, but that's the general rule.
Spears have higher range and have one shot kill moves for zombies, but low durability (you'll likely need to replace them- including during combat) and will push sooner if a zombie is in range.
For newbies, long blunt or spear is probably the best. I worked with long blunt because carrying around multiple spears and swapping in combat was too much for me.
TL;DR
Find a crow bar. Love it. Cherish it. Form a loving relationship with it.
oh, also, a huge tip: Activate Aim Outline for melee weapons
It'll make zombies turn green whenever they're in range to be bonked. It's in your settings... somewhere.
I dunno why the devs don't make that on by default.
Crowbar - Extreme durability makes up for it's average damage. It's an ideal tool when you're in a pinch.
Hammer - Another decent option. While more viable for Construction, they can act as a decent bludgeoning weapon.
Metal Bar/Pipe - These things have saved my skin in so many situations. They are like the Crowbar, but less durable. If you find some in a garage, don't hesitate to take them.
Craftable Spears - Easy to make using foraging; they do tend to break a lot, but you can easily craft more. They are powerful, and one of the few weapons that has a quick kill animation.
As a heads up for newcomers: feel free to grab Firearms, but DO NOT use them until you have a working vehicle. Guns may seem strong and useful, but firing them will attract a ton of Zombies to your location. They only become handy once your aim skill is up, but to practice that, you're gonna need a lot of Zombies to shoot, and a good way to escape them once things get bad. So don't use guns until you get better situations to use them; Unless it's literal "Do or Die" time.
