My character didnt have any specific reactions to the sound, so I can only assume Admin was invis and playing the sound through their mic.
But those sound files are unused insanity files (like other posters mentioned it, schizophrenia trait mod makes use of these files.)
The major keys here are extreme infrequency and randomness (no two stories/events the same). Some very odd and just plain explainable. Some could even seem like bugs or just add doubt. Again, all would have to be extremely rare so as to add self doubt or community doubt as to what really happened. "Did it happen? Was it an event? Was it a bug? Is my character losing their mind? Am I losing my mind?
Some examples.
~ waking up and missing your shoes.
~ finding a door unexpectedly locked, unlocked, open, or closed, when you are fairly certain what state it was before.
~ siphoned gas (all or some)
~ some item outside your door. Dropped by a zombie? hmm.
~ random sounds like OP suggested and many other varieties such as a scream off in the distance, random gunfire (near/far), ~ pursuing zombies suddenly changing course direction to pursue something else.. but what, you dare not seek.
~ an NPC walking up to you out of nowhere slowly, laboringly, asking for help finding their kid. As they approach they they suddenly turn into a zombie. You wonder if you were losing your mind or if there really were just alive. If you decide to end them and loot them, you possibly find a key and a stuffed animal but even that end of the event is extremely rare.
~ You find a polaroid pic (basically a recent screenshot) of your character in some random place leaving you thinking someone is stalking you.
I am sure creativity could prevail here and tbh, for me, that would make the game a little more interesting and less, hmm, likely to leave me feeling depressed after playing a session and then dying. Maybe more spooked, but yeah, definitely left with other thoughts as well. LOL
