The Current wait is 336 years.
They're close™ to adding Animals. And we still have B42 (the crafting overhaul) to look forward too this/next year.
If I had to make a quick guess, a IWBUMS NPC build will be available in 4 years and a full NPC release a year and half later.
What do i base this off on? absolutely nothing concrete. I'm just factoring in the road-map they posted at the begging of this year and their development speed.
Maybe about the same time you learn to speak proper English ... but anyway who cares? They will just be annoying like all computer game NPCs are
I can already see that at some point there will be a world much less populated with Zombies. Naturally such a world would make it more desirable for other NPC survivors to loot or control. You'd figure then that as it is cleared you may tend to encounter a small npc group or solo character looting or expanding their territory.
It doesn't have to be game-changing or super repetitive. AND, they don't have to engage if it cannot be fully implemented yet.. Just make it events. Make it solid, random, and immersive. First encounter you have a "was that a zombie" moment. You've never seen one disappear like that. Two days later you witness zombies chasing an NPC and take them out. Hmm.. So, guess you were right. There was a survivor. But it's all good now. No more interloper: probably.
A few days later you hear random gun-fire events with one closer than the other. But you never see anything again. (at least for weeks) If you do, it is just as odd and vaporous... More like something you just see.
Then, one day you hear about a guy on Steam claiming he was shot by an NPC. Everyone thinks he's crazy. "The devs never said that could happen.". He then shows you the achievement badge; "Shot by a Lurker".
That's how random... and creepy it could be.
Also, try searching the forums and reading up the developer's blogs. Giving an old question like this, you'll rarely get a straight answer from anyone.
Thank you.
