What's the goal of the game?
Is this a sandbox game? What's the goal?

Is it to build a base? If so can I recruit other survivors?
Or is it a solo survival experience where I go from house to house trying to avoid zombies?

I'm new to this game so please let me know. Any advice is helpful as well, thanks

It's a sandbox game, So for the most part you'll need to make your own goals or get ideas from others on what to do.

The only real goal currently is to survive as long as you can so you can make up and complete other goals. And then to survive longer than that- Do your best to pass that bar every time. There aren't other survivors right now(but they're coming sooner or later), Building a base is optional, but certainly a good use of your time since a good base is a safe place.

As for advice, Walk, Don't run. At a walking pace, You are faster than the zombies. You rarely need to run, no matter how many zombies there are. It'll be scary, and depending on zombie group locations and your personal decisions there might be moments where you need to run for a few moments to safely clear a gap that would close before you pass through it.. But other than that, you'll pretty much always want to walk when you're trying to escape zombies. The reason for this is that running consumes stamina- Walking does not, and you want as much stamina for dealing with problems as you can. Running is also much Louder than walking, and will attract even more attention that you dont want.

Second tip, Losing your zombie tails at first is going to feel straight up impossible- It IS possible, it just takes practice and knowledge. When you turn a corner, the game tracks your exact location for about 1-2 seconds, and the zombies who had been following you will go to that point after rounding the corner- So to lose your followers you need to turn one corner, then get around a second or otherwise out of view ASAP; You can for example go in a window, and out the front door of a house, the zombies will enter the house, but you'll be gone before they do so they'll lost track of you. It takes a bit of practice, but once you've got it down, evading zombies isn't terribly hard, even with huge swarms behind you.

Beware of fire! Campfires especially. Do Not Walk Over Fire/let a burning zombie catch you/etc. The moment you catch fire, you're already dead essentially, it does massive damage and even if you have a fire extinguisher handy you may very well not be able to put yourself out before you're dead.

Watch TV; In the first week or so, special shows will appear on the Life and Living channel that give exp for some of your more important skills, like carpentry. On day 1, the first show is at 9am right as you start- get to the TV and watch it. After that, shows are on at 6am, noon, and 6pm until day 7, day 8 only has the 6am and 6pm shows, and day 9 only has the 6am show. If you miss a show, you can still find VHS copies of it in the world.

Lot of other tips to give, but these are some more important ones imo.

Sandbox, no goal, solo or MP. No NPC. (unless you mod, but even with mods it's very crude)

Dying is easy so avoiding death is usually the only real thing in mind for a while, until you get good at the game.

So you end up dying and restarting till, using same world or making new one.

Map is fixed btw, not random. loot is random tho.

You can build a house, but I guess most player use pre existing structure and fill the holes or make an outer wall to avoid attracting random zombies.

Being nomad is perfectly fine, but will probably be quite boring quickly since you can't carry much even with a car unless you mod the game. Unless you like roleplay or smth.

As for advices, don't trust what you can read/watch/listen and always double check, if you look for information. Most steam user posting here post very wrong advices, lot of yt video do the same, the wiki isn't fully up to date but is probably better than relying on other source s.

It's better to learn by trial/testing yourself, and eventually hunt for rare youtube channel or reddit user that might post double checked information up to date with the current version of the game.

As for basics, try hunting for books to learn skill way faster, planting some cabbage and making some water barrel. This can sustain you for as long as you want and allow you to take your time doing anything else.

Also, don't play with fire. You will die.
