Project Zomboid

Project Zomboid

WTH Instantly killed by a lone zombie??
^ What it says on the tin.

Ruined a perfectly good run, around day 23'ish(?), my safe house was finally well provisioned, three sets of keys for good-shape vehicles strategically placed for a quick bug out, and just about all the books I need to make my ascent in to skill development (still missing a generator mag, annoyingly).

But then this Zombie waltzes up in plain view, and one-shots my perfectly healthy, well-fed, well rested toon first thing in the morning as I'm about to raid an adult learning center looking for that elusive generator magazine.

Literally just looks at my toon, does head-back bite animation, all while eating a crowbar to square the face, and I collapse in a heap, wondering just what in the ever living eff just effing happened! I mean, wtf!

Is this some sadistic narrator RNGeezus BS? Something where the game just goes ahead and says, "Hey, you just died! Shucks, I'm sorry, son! Better luck next time! Nyuk! Nyuk! Nyuk! *blows raspberry* Neener-neener-neener! *Puts thumb on nose, wiggles finger* *Price's_Rights_Tuba.wav*"

If that's the case: Not cool, bro! Not cool at all!

no, necroforge is a "cheat menu" mod with tons of features.

DBbrowser is a real tool used for managing databases on a computer, not relevant to games, it just happens to be able to interface with Project Zomboid's databases, you can use it to change the death flag on your character from 1 to 0 (is dead = yes --> is dead = no)

this is the process to resurrect a character, if you want the full, proper process, i can tell you.
Yes, please, do tell. I'm not willing to surrender a bug to a bug, or even a feature, where instapermadeath is a thing that RNGeezus and his Apostles on this forum can later laugh about. I can (and have) accept a death that was warranted, where I put myself in a vulnerable position. But this wasn't that.
here!! i made a funky little guide about how to do it!!
make sure to tell me if this guide didn't work for you, I may have forgotten something, but I'm happy to help either way!!

are you sure you were at full health?

what settings are you playing with?
BattleGoose Aug 23, 2023 @ 9:40pm
Multiplayer or solo? Was it a swing or was it a push?

Yes. I had not needed to heal any injuries for several in-game days. In fact, I spent the full day previously reading a couple of skill books and sorting crap in my storage. My toon began this encounter in perfect health. As for settings, I tinkered with the time for water and power shut of for a modestly delayed shut down over default, and turned off Knox infections by blood transmission. I have a couple of QOL mods that deal mostly with inventory management. Nothing that should touch combat in anyway.

Single player. Pretty sure it was a swing, or at least it should have been. All I really do know is that I clicked the button to attack Zed as he closed within range, something I've done hundreds of times, and he face tanked whatever animation the game had queued up and instantly ended my run.

That sucks. I know the feeling. There’s a mod out there that allows you to carry over skills to a new character, via some journal or something the previous character creates. Not exactly sure, but that’s the idea behind it. Better luck next time.

It's either a bug, mod issue (even if they are just QoL mods, they can be the cause) or you accidentally set infection to instantly and transmission still is on. I recommend you double check your sandbox settings.

We had a case here where someone also instantly to a single zombie. Turns out he had infection set to instantly.

Either this or the legendary bug that no one can replicate exactly yet.

Your attack button will push when zoms are too close. Must've just been within that threshold. I killed a lot of characters just learning to fight, may be the worst part of the game.

Known bug that is kinda hard/unable to replicate. Happened to me a couple of times from a front non-bite and while I was sitting just insta death. Can do much but keep saves following the IWBMS rule

I don't think it's a big issue. So I guess I don't care if it's fixed or not. Rarely happens to be honest.

was it an absolutely **instantaneous** death?
or was it a death within just a few split seconds?

if you get necroforge and download DBbrowser you can edit your save and resurrect your character

It was *literally* the first thing that Zed did. I squared up against him, waited for him to advance to within striking distance, and then my toon died right then and there, on the spot. The only feedback that I had that anything had happened at all was that I heard my mouse button "click" when I attacked Zed as I had done a thousand times before.

In fact, I have this mod installed for the first time and even prepared a journal and all that. But I had been doing so well that I neglected to update/record entries daily, thinking that I wasn't going to need it after all. Who could have predicted that this game is the type of game to Summon RNGeezus to persecute players with a chance to strike them down with instant permadeath with no clear way of preparing for or avoiding it for the lulz?

Except I wasn't laughing....

Does this mod maintain a rolling auto savegame backup folder to restore back to when ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ like this happens?

My whole thought this entire thread has been both this and "what if OP's neck got scratched/lacerated" lmao. Probably one of the fastest ways to die that doesn't really pop up with a warning anywhere except the red bleeding moodle.

I was thinking this.
OP took a bite straight to the jugular and died instantly on the spot.
Sad day

Just a heads up, there are Scarfs that you can Tailor for additional neck protection.

Edit: More info added.
