The power grid is very complex and interconnected with other regions

If you want to restore the grid for Knox Country you first have to bring a dedicated power station back online. There's power Transformer Stations in Knox Country but no power stations.

Second you need to repair the facilities responsible for power transfer. Depending upon how the specific grid for Knox Country failed you can need highly specialized equipment to fix the grid. Anything from miles of High Voltage power lines to Power Transformers to power insulators.

Third you gotta isolate the Knox Country grid from the rest of the US Power Grid. Due to how the US Power Grid works you'll need to do a lot of work to isolate Knox Country to prevent the power from just leaking out and overloading your Power Generator; causing Brown Outs

Fourth, you gotta deal with bringing the grid online from complete darkness. Even on a small scale due to all the power safeguards to keep systems isolated it's a very complicated task to bring a power facility back online. A number of power stations like Nuclear or Coal actually need power to generate power. As a result you need a lot of materials just to get them started. Once you do however it's more work just to keep the power flowing down the lines down to your house to flip on a light bulb.

unironically, I think you will be able to do this in the next build with their new power line system.

you'd have to connect each building to a new, separate grid, because like quill said it'd be hooked up still to the nation at large. power CAN and DOES flow out of your house onto the grid, and that's why, when you operate a generator in real life, you're NEVER, EVER supposed to connect it directly to your house lines. it breaks a lot of stuff or something idk. there's a big warning sign on the generator usually.

It's called Backfeeding and it can cause issues with safety systems and can turn dead wires into live wires: resulting in shocks or fires

This video here is a stellar informative video on the power grid and what happens during a blackout, and the kindof efforts needed to restore power afterwards.

The TL;DR of which is that 'no single human is going to be able to realistically restart and maintain the power grid on their own'.

The power grid is the single largest 'machine' in human history/society, and one of our greatest constantly evolving accomplishments... And it is far, far, far, far and away more complex than most people ever realize.

You'd be spending several YEARS dismantling interconnections around the state, paring down connections to just the most vital ones to reduce load, repairing machines and wiring (and you'll never be able to keep up with maintenance) and far, far more besides, all just to MAYBE be able to power the area again.... And all without a lick of sense in electrical engineering so you'll prolly fry yourself at some point and have to start over. And that's all before mentioning what Quill already did; The actual power generation for the area isn't even within the exclusion zone.

And, Of course, How are you going to fuel it? It's 1993 rural kentucky. It's not wind power, Not solar power; It's nuclear power, coal power, or natural gas power. Solar existed back then but it wasn't really consumer grade, and it was nowhere near efficient enough to warrant use as actual power generation; And wind had barely even been considered... One person isn't gonna be able to acquire the amount of coal or natural gas required for sustained use, nor manage an entire nuclear power plant on their own.

There is a mod for it, it's called Restore Utilities

The Lousville Gas and Electric employs almost 2000 people. Not including suppliers and sub-contractors.

Don't think your little zomboid dude is going to put in those kinds of manhours in a lifetime.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
