The Project Zomboid subreddit has entered an indefinite blackout in protest of Reddit's recent API changes
Reddit recently announced that they will soon be making changes to their API that will essentially kill third-party apps and various moderator tools, which a large portion of users rely on. In protest, a long list of subreddits have come together and scheduled a site-wide blackout starting today; some subreddits will set themselves as private for only 48 hours, while some will stay offline indefinitely until things change. The PZ subreddit has done the latter.

I'm not sure how many people here use the subreddit, but I lurked there frequently and I figured it would be worth mentioning.

What terrible news, it was just mostly dank memes anyways

Spez’s fake AMA changed it to indefinite for many, including our Reddit mods.

Uh oh. Ok thanks.

To be clear, few (if anyone) believes they should be able to use Reddit’s api for free, but between the short timeframe to adopt to the changes, massively overcharging for it in comparison to other services, providing no alternatives or augmentations (like requiring servicing of ads), degrading developers who built the 3rd party apps, the last week is just a ♥♥♥♥-show.
My problem is how hard they've been pushing their official app on us in recent years. Originally it was just a pop-up you could ignore. Now, all NSFW content and even a number of SFW subs are unavailable unless you download the app. You could bypass this using the old.reddit trick on the mobile website, but it's only a matter of time until they come after that too. At times, it seems they're deliberately making the mobile website worse to force people into using their app.

it was getting really bad with the in-jokes (the jokes are just dumb now), and people act like if you don't know the jokes you're trash. i'm glad its gone actually!

I like seeing peoples bases and hear them talk about their challenges with the game, not look at the 1000th tele-corn meme

I actually enjoyed reading the posts/stories it's unfortunate that some will be penalized for the greed of others. but what else is new lol.

I hope this will cause the downfall of Reddit. Who thought that karma system was a good idea?

UPDATE: The blackouts end today and the PZ subreddit is still private, so they seem to be keeping their word.

thx. I start playing 3 days ago, ton of questions and all that. 90% of google searches lead me to reddit, started to think PZ is some sort of elite club, where plebs like me not allowed.

Is there a current community run alternative to the PZ subreddit? It was an amazing resource for learning about game mechanics and sharing challenges/base designs.

There is the official discord server. I haven't joined it so I don't know what its like, but it might be what you are looking for, and where I'm assuming most people went.

For something closer to Reddit there is a PZ page you can access on kbin, which has been a pretty good Reddit alternative, at least for me. Definitely needs more people posting though, pretty empty right now.
