Can the helicopter see you standing next to a window?
Cus the helicopter got me killed and I can't figure out how it saw me. I was indoors the entire day (well before and after the heli's spawn window)

Yes

If you don't want to be spotted stay in an interior room with no doors/windows you can see through and just... do nothing. Don't move, don't make noise. Just do nothing. The Helicopter will fly away after a few hours of circling the area. If it spots you it'll follow you the whole day no matter what you do
Iunno about the interior room thing tbh. I've hidden in windowed rooms before just with the curtains down and the helicopter missed me. This was the first time I opened the curtain to peek, so I was wondering if that's what did it.

It wasn't immediate though. They broke in the bottom floor (i was in the fire station) but never came upstairs. Like they both did and didn't know where I was. It wasn't till I went downstairs and outside that I realized there was a whole SWARM of them out there and ultimately died after a long and painful chase.
Yes. It saw you because you pulled the curtains back
Well damn. Sucks to lose 6 in game days worth of progress, but lesson learned I guess.
When the chopper doesn't see you, it still moves around and causes some random zombie movement, and zombies move around randomly on their own a bit too.

So if you didn't clear the area of zombies, a few zombies nearby may break in. A few zombies can be dealt with indoors, but the safe thing to do is to clear the area around where you'll be hiding beforehand.

I had already cleared the police station, courthouse, and neighborhood nearby. There was a TON of em after the heli did or didn't see me.

I head downstairs and find 2 or 3 have made their way into the building. I clear em out. Then a few more come in through the garage door that I now realize is broken. While in the middle of fighting, some more come in. Then a LOT more come in. Now I'm in danger of being cornered, so I make a run for it towards the nearby neighborhood while I have the chance; hoping to shake the main horde and clear out a house to regroup in. Then I see how many are outside...

Now, at this point, it's pitch dark out and I already have the mild fatigue debuff from attempting to defend my base and ultimately running away. Not long after that I get smacked with the first level sleep debuff. To make matters worse, steam deck forces you to zoom all the way in when a zombie notices you, and with zombies swarming all over the place, my camera is practically permalocked at low zoom and I can't see far enough to plan my optimal escape route.

On top of that, there are now just as many zombies in the neighborhood as there was when the game started. With the darkness, forced low zoom level, and increasingly severe fatigue and sleep debuffs (+others), there's nothing I can do to escape or fight the zombies. All I can do is walk 3 feet ahead of the pack. My last ditch plan was to grab all the aggro I could, lead them away from my base and lose em on a tall fence. Unfortunately, my now crippling debuffs prevented me from climbing the fence, where I was promptly dogpiled and executed.

To get back to your point tho. I did clear all the zombies in the area. Iunno if the chopper saw me, but it feels like it must've considering how many zombies wound up concentrated in my general area.
Oh, and I play while sat in a VERY loud room (basically a boiler / compressor room), so I can't hear a dam thing when zombies are beating on doors or windows. I had no idea they were even in the house. The heli could've been right on top of me and I never would have known.

Only reason I don't take the deaf perk is cus being able to "hear" means zombies visually appear on screen when they get close behind you.

But I can't actually hear anything. Not the game's fault. Just felt like pertinent info to the ordeal.
