I mean there's a guy on Youtube who eats Military Rations from WW1 and the canned stuff looks weird but for the most part edible
Yeah i watched that guy before.
Though i do think that weird long term cut off points like Canned food expiration is worth it. Like if they went through differnt stages.
(Old) (Rusty) (Compromised)
still ok - like stale- toxic
They are interested in doing deep into the future like 30 years. Were brainstorming traits, and ways in which people from deep in the future can acquire skills when everything as degraded.
The dude from the Youtube show, who eats rations, and sometimes old ones. Certain stuff is okay, Like grains last a long time, Honey last a long time, and peanut butter last a long time. Chocolate last a long time aswell. That ww1 ration he ate was beef stock and grain porridge. And he only ate 1 or 2 spoons.
He gives good advise, if the can is bursting, then something inside has gone rancid. If there was a hiss on open, he doesn't eat it
anyhow i feel like cut-off -points like canned food expiration give players long term goals, like the first goal is to experience winter for example. That would be like such a pro goal the canned food cut-off.
Problem in that is that well everyone can have food by that period of time, from the farm, and since farm food is SO GOOD, i think they'd need to buff cans, get some happiness out of them, less from grown food. And use that it is the comfort or the convenience or the memories that make it so your character prefer to eat that stuff. Less incentive to grow their own and invalidate even the looting of canned food. Which is what farming mainly does, invalidates the need for canned food, and since canned food is calorie horrific aswell, in comparison there is not much point in looting it. Aside unless the empty can itself makes good arrow-head-craft.
I think my longest playthrough was a little over a year, but I got a little bored
