So it seems like placing it here powers up the washing machine room (top right corner of the building) and also the fridge (bottom left corner of the building)
Looks like the best possible location
Yeah i did the same ages ago. Also placed my antique oven outside to heat up the farm.(and slept in a room nearby)
Not just the edges though i think, it is better to replace all the tiles there, as sometimes you may walk over them, but the next time you login you might just fall through:)
But the walk-to feature is a good trick, did not know that!
So you could put it in the backyard and it will still provide power to the entire building.
Zombies ALWAYS take the shortest path towards a generator if they hear it, so if you put it up stairs, they will take the most direct path through doors, windows and up stairs to reach it.
If you don't destroy the stairs, this means zombies will come up to the upper level whenever they can to get to the generator.
Personally, I just build a small 1x1 shed around the generator to cut the noise down to extend out just 5 tiles and toss it in the front, so it can power the nearby street light as well as the fire station.
