Build 42, like a year away.
Build 43, (human NPC) a year and 6 months away.
Build 47 (NPC nearing final form) 2.5-3 years away. 4 maximum.
Thanks for listening to my tedtalk.
There are mods that add NPCs, but otherwise they only existed in old builds.
Though animals are planned to be added.
And eventually people NPCs will be added, they’re on the roadmap.
I mean, they are in roadmap, just gonna take awhile.
Also I’m not personally too big on idea of NPCs but that might be just me.
I’m just hoping there’ll be option to disable them.
The zombies will disable the npcs for you. Except they won't because all the zombies will have rotted away before the npc update.
If npc's come in the next 5 years I'll eat my balls
Jokes a side more than a couple npc mods at the workshop, including settings for their equipment and their settlements. Including the npc dog companions.
From what I have noticed for the short time I have been playing around with mods, traits, maps and settings, the player can change the game drastically by using the mods.

If npc's don't come out by tomorrow noon I'll eat my balls and his balls.
Damn now I've just given you a good excuse :(
A balls dinner date? You're on!
😄
He made his own bed, so by all means NPCs!
