If the game supported a 'failover' switch to activate your backup when the first generator fails, then you'd get the extra time. Unfortunately the generators will act in parallel with each other and offer NO additional power for your grid. Consider the now ubiquitous diagrams of PZ generator range (five z levels, 20 square unit radius). When you inspect the generator it'll conveniently tell you every appliance and light fixture within that range. A second generator will also give you that number as well, assuming they're placed right next to each other. Running both at the same time merely doubles the consumption for the same grid of power coverage. Turning your 'B' generator on prior to servicing the 'A' generator can have the benefit of lowering the amount of lightbulb death though.
Generally speaking, a generator is not lore-friendly in terms of fuel consumption and needs to be set to .3-.45 or so on the sandbox settings, so that might get you closer to the goal you're looking for.
Either that or run power conduits to increase range (a la Fallout 4) to make use of all this copper wire which has no practical use otherwise.
This has nothing to do with gas efficiency. I just want more range lol

There are SIX of those on top of the Grand Ohio Mall. It's only slightly more well defended though.
Now that just a suggestion, but if you don't want to refuel the generator so frequently i would go to the next house, dismantle everything that consumes energy (or remove them from the house) and set up the second generator there. With the house clean, you could put the freezers inside and doesn't care, you could also keep one freezer in your house and a second on the second house as well, it would increase the time generator would run in a long term but you also would need to refill 2 generator that would probably be a little far from each other.
I'll also suggest this: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2883397918&searchtext=generator
If you're ok with mods, this literally tells you how many days/hours you have left on the generator when you check it, it can help a little better than guessing how many time you can be far away from your house.
I can't confirm though, since I haven't bothered testing this myself.
