I run into similar issue, my guess is it's because you need to be on correct side of the wall to dismantle it. Sledgehammer did fix the issue for me.
You can replicate what happened to me easily: Build stairs and door frame / door right on top of the stairs, then it's impossible to disassemble the door and door frame, both can only be destroyed by sledge.
Say you had a 2nd floor railing you want to dismantle from the north or west. You can't, so you'd either have to build aaaaall the way around it to get to the south or east side, OR destroy it with a sledge and not get any materials back; the sledgehammer is the easiest way.
