generally speaking, you have to train nimble to be faster than lunging zombies (level 5 i believe you're about the same speed.) taking a nimble modifier at character creation if you're going to be doing a ton of melee fighting is a good idea.
use longer ranged weapons like long blunts, they give you more room to turn and run if you need to.
never underestimate just how useful keen hearing is. being able to see zombies behind you that far has saved me time and time again.
when in doubt - play safe. dont fight zombies indoors. if you are clearing a horde, give yourself plenty of space to turn and run, learn your weapon ranges and multihits.
current playthrough - 2 and a half months survived, 15000 zombie kills with about 14k of that being melee.
have cleared muldraugh (spawn) and most of the path up to the Louisville checkpoint (x2 pop fast shamblers, no respawn)
small blade does better than people give it credit for, especially if you get a mod that gives knives their crit chance back. the sheer damage to endurance usage is astounding.
