Modding servers SUX need help
Hey this whole modding process is very confusing. I have looked up a TON of instructions and nothing is very specific. Most instructions skip steps, don't tell you needed info, don't include process, etc.

Can anyone point me to a good instructional on this? I have been messing with this g-portal server for hours and can't even get it to boot.

you can try to set up your server first through local hosting on your pc, once you're happy with the server settings, mods and have checked that everything is working. you can copy your server ini file and sandbox vars file from C:\Users\name\Zomboid\Server and paste it in the configuration settings in gportal.

Btw try to avoid changing server settings through the basic settings page in gportal bec sometimes it messes your ini files and the settings get mixed up.

Read the Mods= and Workshop= and Maps= lines in this guide:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2682570605

That would be all you need to know basically, just add the workshop ID to to the workshop line, mod ID to the mod line, map folder ID to the Map line, make sure the maps are always loaded before Muldraugh. And you are done at that point.

And g-portal just downloads all the mods I don't have to ftp in and upload em?

Currently I'm dealing with a missing file listed when I load up so If g-portal downloads based on that list of mods AI provide then it would likely be due to me not including a dependency in this list I think.

Yes, if a dependency is not installed then it would show up as a missing error.
The server installs the mods based on the workshop IDs that you listed. There is no need to use FTP.

Um...if there are multiple names for the mod do we need to include all/multiple of them? Some seem to be alternative mods but some seem to be more like...extra stuff? Unclear with the multiple mod_id's.

I dun even know. Still popping a black screen trying to get in after loading the level and displaying "this is the story of how you die" text. No red errors on screen but lots I cannot interpret in the log files relating to 'vehicle type "Base.StepVanMailSmashedRight" isn't in VehicleZoneDistribution', 'no such vehicle script "Base.f700flatbed" in IsoChunk.RandomizeModel' or 'vehicle type "Base.92wranglerranger" doesn't exist'....I have included the workshop id's and the mod ids. All required map priority is set (mainly the rv interior and its partner the emergency vehicle interior).

I went back over each and every mod (about 30) and enesured I had ALL mod_id's included (separated by ';') and the same for workshop id's.

Just nothing.

Any ideas appreciated.

OMG my brain is going to explode. I think I'm done with this one.

There is a mod called server mod manager. It has a much better UI. You can also try loading the mod giving you troubles the last.

That is really helpful and seems WAY better than what is installed.

So far though nothing. Just nothing. All mods are pretty normal stuff I have also seen elsewhere in use. Always the black screen after the 'story of when die'....been messing with it for 7 hours now and literally nothing.

we host a pvp server on g-portal and this is how we set it up:

you can try to set up your server first through local hosting on your pc, once you're happy with the server settings, mods and have checked that everything is working. you can copy your server ini file and sandbox vars file from C:\Users\name\Zomboid\Server and paste it in the configuration settings in gportal.

Btw try to avoid changing server settings through the basic settings page in gportal bec sometimes it messes your ini files and the settings get mixed up.

When you do set up the server (on g-portal) do you turn on the server before adding the mods and setting all the vars or do you setup the server before you turn it on initially?
charli3 Feb 24, 2023 @ 3:45pm
You can try turning the server off first before adding all the ini and vars. After that you can hop in to check if everything's working. Bec if it doesn't work the first time, you're gonna wipe a few times to get it to work, especially if you're adding map mods. Whenever you do wipe tho while setting it up make sure to double check the ini and the vars if you've already updated it to your settings and not the default settings :)

Also whenever you encounter errors or if you're not able to load in make sure to check your server logs either through gportal logs page or your console file on your pc to check which mods are giving you problems. You can try removing it and launching the server or check the workshop page to see if there are other mods that might conflict with it.

It's really a trial and error process that usually takes a full afternoon or morning to set up.

OMG yes.

It took me all day it seems. I rage quit a couple times and went to play some MTG IRL. But DUDE....Thanks so much for the tips! I installed the mod manager and mod manager server stuff then used that to ensure all the dependancies were correct. It was VERY helpful. I did go ahead and set it up hosting locally in this way and messed around til I got it working. I'm up to 95 mods now (mostly cars & cassettes) and it works fine. I may trim it back a bit though but I am happy to say it now seems an easy(ish) process at this point.

Again thank you so much man!
