Some specifically say: You need a new save, or if you don't start a new save, all previously visited areas wont have new mod stuff.
Do your homework on the mods you want to try. Only add one or two at a time and not 150 all at once without understanding each mod and its synergy with the game and all the other mods.
Might just be a good idea to sit down with your friends and ask if a new game is just a better idea to introduce mods. Starting new isn't really that bad of a thing, loot will rapidly resupply. bases will be rebuilt. the game won't be any less fun.
You can always make a back up of that save and keep it stashed away if the mod stuff fails miserably.
