How far are we from NPCs\animals?
Simple question.

? how can we tell ?

No insider information is leaked.

We are here: Build 41 is finalized and in stable.

The team is working on build 42 stuff when they wake up and go to work. Build 42 is the start of systems to allow NPC and npc as animals will be first out, and those will be domesticated animals for farm type life.

When they are ready it will go to beta branch.

They will let us know how things are progressing through the dev news. The progression will never give exact dates but rather vague time frames.

That is all we know.

We can only guess release dates, and the best you will get. A guess.

we'll probably get animals somewhere in early 2023

I predict 9 months for B43 / Animals / Owning me farm

Hopefully soon, games almost 10 years old at this point

At least it's a good ten years. We could have been stuck with a Duke Nukem Forever.

Animals? Year minimum. NPCs? Maybe 2-3 years. Proper NPCs with factions, traders etc.? 5 years.
I think a lot of people will be disappointed with NPCs. Making open world AI is hard, especially if enemies are evenly spread out, and when advanced maneuvers are necessary to kill all those hordes. How are NPCs supposed to navigate that? All NPC mods to date have been jank.

At least it's not 7 Days to Die type of Deal, where you had to buy CPU and GFX every 3 years into the alpha, and it still runs horrible. Great game, just performance is jank as hell. Not here.

Going by previous record, I would make an educated guess and say version 42 will come in second half of 2023.

Since 42 is just animals and human NPCs are for version 43, so I would throw it'll come somewhere in 2024.

The build 41 took around 3 years to be fully released.
After the stable version of build 42, we will have more 6 builds and the 48 will be the last one (Version 1.0).
If, each build will take between one and two years, expect nothing less than 10 years to get the 1.0.

BUT,
We are talking about the NPCs. If you want to have the basic functions, you will have them on build 43 - They might release somewhere between 2024 and the end of 2025. If we get in 2024, the stable version might come only at the end of 2025.
Considering that build 43 is just a scratch about what will come, do not expect anything GREAT because there will be 3 different stages/builds for NPCs and each stage might be huge in terms of content.

The release of 43 might break A LOT of mods. lol

I think it’s getting close sort of hoping they drip feed us. Drop the chicken one month. Drop the cow another month. To let us digest each addition.

Just one chicken?
That's not enough, make it 3 at least!

NPCs are still unknown. But they were in the game previously,
Previously as in before the game was even available on Steam yes. The version that was released on Steam already didn't have NPC's anymore.

Guess we can always hope that PZ gets a larger dev team and more funding in the future too, game deserves it.
